Anyone ever travelled on this ferry line (it's in western Scotland)? I'd be interested in cascade's thoughts on this line compared to BC Ferries. They seem like generally smaller vessels. More like a whole lot of gulf island runs and a few longer ones with less traffic than BC Ferries major routes? They look like nice ferries.. and nice scenery too. A few months ago I actually ordered some free (I think) brochures from them. It would be nice to go there sometime if I could ever afford it! Great website: www.calmac.co.uk/

I have travelled a few times - when we went scuba diving in Scotland. I have been to Bute - diving and visiting the Grand Prix cars - and to Skye - again scuba diving. There are lots of castles and Clans - plus of course distilleries - Whiskey - at every small village - town.
You can see there history on the web site. What is not told - that the Royal Mail - have a Royal charter to deliver the mail - and as you can see from the pictures - they do not have airports - so the mail comes over by ferry. This is the real life blood of the business.
They had trouble a few years back - and due to the "Royal Mail" charter - the Scottish Office had to step in and take over the route - business - so the Royal Mail could get through.
The mail use to be move via the rail network in the Uk - then it went by trucks - but for out laying regions they have tried planes - but here there is no airport. One or two of the island - they land the planes on the beaches.
The crossing are a bit wild - as it is very windy there. I have only been there in the summer time - for the scuba diving - I don't think I would like to cross in the winter time - I have sea leg's but not that good. Plus I would like to keep my food inside me - rather than outside me.
