Is it just me or is this ferry on fire. If it isn't on fire then it has some real bad exhaust problems.

Nobody seems to be panicking on the ship, so it must be the exhaust, or maybe it broke down and tugs had to tow it to the docks.

Well I have a couple pics of her and every pic shows smoke coming out the back.

It looks like bad exhaust. Also, by the look of the background, it doesn't look like the air is any cleaner.

Ugh, our ships aren't nearly as bad. Neither is our coastline, if you know what I mean.

Ugh, our ships aren't nearly as bad. in the interest of preventing a trans-atlantic ferry-fan war (for the umpteenth time), let me point out that such comments have little benefit for the global ferry community. Also, as rebuttal, I would like to offer the following recent pic of the BC Ferry "Bowen Queen".....which I can't show because the stupid website "webshots" is down right now....but Scott A. has a pic of the Bowen Queen blowing some serious smoke last month on that site. Trust me, the Bowen looks like the Cheech&Chong-Queen on that day.

This photo was posted in the Control Room. The link is here. I remember it said below the shot that it was a failure of something mechanical in nature... When I am on her tonight, I will jot down the caption that is on that shot...

That looks black meaning unburned fuel, the engine probably isn't putting out the rpm that the governor is calling for. If it's do to with the valve guides then the crank case will get pressurized and the engineroom guys will be seeing smoke coming out of the crankcase breather. Also being that bad could be a blown turbo, injector dribble or late injection.

That looks like the Al Sabini, I just found that on 23rd April, 2003, the first week Balearia had her on the Palma - Ibiza - Denia run she had an electrical fault and had to be towed back to the dock in Ibiza harbour. That thing is running six 3616 Caterpillars

Anyway, visible particulates aren't always the worst kind of pollution, although they look bad. I drive a '78 Impala, and though the engine's in good shape, and there's no visible exhaust once it's warmed up, it puts out many times as much crap as the newest vehicles. What you can't see can still hurt you.
