Hi folks:
I know there have been many people asking for one of the replacement Northern ferries to be called the Spirit of Hartley Bay, which I think is an absolutely excellent idea.
Would it potentially be more respectful to call the ship Spirit of Gitk'a'ata (Hartley Bay) rather than just Spirit of Hartley Bay?
I think Gitk'a'ata is the Tsimshian name for Hartley Bay.

Could be a minor vessel's name, because those are the vessels with native names in them.

Spirit of Gitk'a'ata would be a pretty good name, and would probably show a better gesture to the First Nations up there.
Harry, the Minor Ferries aren't the only ones with native names...... Tsawwassen, and Cowichan... There are a few other names I'm unsure of....

Yeah but those are names of places which are actually called Tsawwassen and Cowichan. Hartley Bay is Hartley Bay.
Sorry mark, I never gave you a proper welcome. Welcome to the forum!

They either put Hartley Bay in Brackets or they just don't use it. I don't think anyone or any tourist would know what it means if they didn't put Hartley Bay in brackets and say it means Harltey Bay in the announcement

The name of the ship wouldn't be for the edification of tourists, it would be to honor the people who stepped up so well at the sinking- and if markkarj's research is right, Hartley Bay was probably known as something other than Hartley Bay long before white people named it that. The native people there may well want to call it by their traditional name. In any event, BC Ferries should make plans to provide the community with ferry service, and not just have a named ship sail right by.

I think Spirit of Hartley Bay should be a vessel that stops in Hartley bay too.

For sure. Someone else on here mentioned that the size of the community is comparable to others on the central coast (e.g. Ocean Falls) and yet Hartley Bay is very close to the Inside Passage itself; that is, the vessel wouldn't have to divert too far for that stop.
I would say the ferry should be named Spirit of Hartley Bay. How many tourists would be able to figure out the Tsimshian name?

Then we have figured out a second name for a new northern vessel. Thank you Mark for the idea, welcome to the club.

I think they should stick to Hartley Bay...it's easier to pronounce.

Come on, guys. We say we want to honor people, yet we can't be bothered to learn how to pronounce the name of their village, and we're worried about the convenience of tourists? I mean.... really.

It's common convention to use an English name for First Nations communities.
The media follow this convention. It's not a matter of convenience for the reporters -- it's what they're supposed to do.
I would say it'd be more logical to name the ferry with the English name. I don't think it does a disservice to the people of Hartley Bay whatsoever to do so.
But that's only my opinion.
