Last summer Hartley Bay and the Queen of the North made it in the news, just a short couple paragraphs. Apparently, a man in Hartley Bay suffered what they feared was a heart attack. Because of the low cloud cover, an air ambulance was unable to land, but the Queen of the North was nearby and picked the man up and took him to Prince Rupert where he was taken to hospital. Yesterday it was the residents of Hartley Bay who came to the rescue of the crew and passengers of the Queen of the North. This story in a small way reflects the relationship and dependance that the northern communities on the coast (especially) have on the ferries. We always hear about the accidents that happen on BC Ferries, that's when the media pays attention. But every year there are way more good stories about ferries and their crews coming to the rescues of small boats, divers, fishing boats, kayakers, etc. Most of the time this doesn't make the news. How about "we" name one of the new northern vessels the "M.V. Hartley Bay"

That would be a good name for one of the new north ferries!

How about "we" name one of the new northern vessels the "M.V. Hartley Bay" What an awesome idea, John..! I truly think that naming a future vessel to serve the northern communities would be a VERY good idea. BCFS has already thanked the residences of Hartley Bay for their assistance in the rescue. I would think that BCFS would do something more for that community to further show their appreciation, and naming a vessel after their community would be a wonderful gesture.

Fantastic idea. Whatever vessel becomes the permanent replacement, she cannot be named the Queen of the North. So, that would leave us to name her after a specific place.
I think the heroic efforts of those Hartley Bay residents deserves recognition like this.

Because of the low cloud cover, an air ambulance was unable to land, but the Queen of the North was nearby and picked the man up and took him to Prince Rupert where he was taken to hospital. I knew that I had recently heard the name Hartley Bay. Indeed naming a ship after this community would be a nod to all other similar communities up and down the coast. The reasons why these communities are/have-been so integral to BC/Canada in general would be too long to list here; I will, however, state that, simply, we would not be the same without them.

A comment in Friday's Times Colonist suggested this as well. That person suggested "Spirit of Hartley Bay" in keeping with the SOBC and SOVI (and plus it is so fitting it's almost chilling)

Or what would also be good, is open up a terminal there (if they wanted). They would no longer be self-dependent on resources.

I have to agree with that last comment. What's the point in 'honoring' Hartley Bay with a ship naming if the thing just sails on past every day or so? Hartley Bay is the only community in that area that has no ferry service; it's more than twice the size of Ocean Falls, and yet Ocean Falls gets a ferry a week in the summer. I can't imagine the residents saying no.

CBC News reported Friday night that the crew of the QON has requested the replacement vessel be named "Spirit of Hartley Bay", in honour of a community that prevented the accident from being much worse.

I like "spirit of" but now were getting off topic...
I heard on the news that this is, in fact, a potential for BCF's new Inside Passage vessel.
