I don't know about you but I would not want to be on a V Class ship on any overnight trip, no places to sleep. None of the vessels on the southern routes would be well suited for the Queen of the North's route.

Harry look at the Queen of the North, look at the V Class and tell me if you see anny fundemental architectural differences... the answer will be yes. The V class are not suited for anything other than what they're doing really. look what was done to the victoria to get her across an ocean, and even then she couldn't have been all that stable in rough waters. Even in high winds situations in Tsawwassen they can't sail. The night the North sank a V couldn't even go out.

Cascade... what's the average age of a ship of this type that would be avaialble for sale in Europe do you think? I ask because I wonder if any of the vessels available will meet the Transport Canada eregulations that are now in place, obviously the QotN did not.

If the Queen of the North did not meet Transport Canada regulations, she would not even be allowed to sail Dane. Don't all vessels that are Canadian owned have to be Transport Canada certified yearly?

Greetings!
It sure was a sad day for all in the maritime communities here in the States as well as in Canada when BCF lost a vital vessel.
An idea came across my mind the moment I learned of the wreck of the MV QUEEN OF THE NORTH: "If I was Governor of Alaska, I would make one of my ships available to BCF until they get an interim replacement". I've learned from direct correspondence with AMH that the Governor, indeed, made an offer but was refused by BCF due to docking compatibility issues.
We hope BCF reverses this decision and take AMH's wonderful offer. A second slip can be added to Port Hardy for use by an AMH ferry's stern-first landings during times of crisis. The major AMH ferries have fixed bows, so all cars would need to turn around at the forward end for stern unloading (this ship would land stern first at both Port Hardy and Prince Rupert). Large vehicles unable to turn around can use the MV QUEEN OF PRINCE RUPERT.
If you remember the 1990s, BCF's Victoria Line subsidiary was formed and the MV QUEEN OF BURNABY (in disguised names) went on the Seattle - Victoria run. There were floating transfer spans at both terminals (GoogleEarth shows the Victoria span gone). I think the one at Seattle's Pier 48 is still there, so BCF can barge this to Port Hardy, add side dolphins, and the AMH vessel (either the MV MALASPINA or MV MATANUSKA) can be in business working with the QUEEN OF PRINCE RUPERT for this summer while BCF can carefully find a suitable interim replacement.
Anything can be done to make key ferry terminals compatible with neighboring systems' ferries in the event of crisis. Let's be positive on this agenda.
May God bless the wonderful people of Hartley Bay for their incredible work in braving everything to help save the QUEEN OF THE NORTH's survivors. They will really earn everything in getting a new ferry named in their honour. MV SPIRIT OF HARTLEY BAY, an early welcome from our maritime communities to you, your crew, and all who will sail aboard you!
-Seattle

If the Queen of the North did not meet Transport Canada regulations, she would not even be allowed to sail Dane. Don't all vessels that are Canadian owned have to be Transport Canada certified yearly? It was allowed to sail because it had already been purchased, it's known as "grandfathering." That's also why she had a mandatory retirement date. If BCFS tried to purchase the Queen of the North today, they could not because of those modified safety regulations.

I just tried to find some information for you, but was so far unnsuccessful. The Queen of Chilliwack and the Queen of Prince Rupert, like the North have mandatory reirement dates because they do not meet Transport Canada safety regulations.

This is a good offer, that I think, not unlike yourself, BC Ferries should take advantage of. I never knew about these "Transfer Spans" that you speek of, but adding a few modifications and barging it to Port Hardy is a great idea. Welcome to the forum

I mean I am not SO familiar with the BC - ferries. So without beeing dreamy or anything here, I would like to ask you BCF-specialists, who do have a bit of an insight in the company, HOW BIG are the chances that they´ll bring on one of our beautiful European ferries ? Since we´re the "home of the overnight crossings"

Since we´re the "home of the overnight crossings" I could see BCF buying a European Ferry for the Inside Passage/North Coast Winter Service. The Queen of the North was built in Germany and served in the Baltic until 1974 as the Stena Danica II. The cabin space on a European Ferry would be a huge asset for the North Coast/Inside Passage.

Yeah, and I am sure no one here wants that vessel on the Northern Routes.

The vessel will ruin the beauty of the Inside Passage.
