I have been thinking about a trip like this recently. I have been looking into Alaska Cruises but it is just too expensive especially if you want to go on your own. But looking into a trip up the Inside Passge on the Nor Ad then transfering to the Alaska State Ferry up to Skagway sounds like cool idea. It would actually be cheaper doing that than sailing right from Bellingham up to Skagway.
For example
Aug 31st drive to Port Hardy and stay a night in a hotel
Sept 1st 7:30am Nor Ad departs arriving in Rupert at 10:30pm then would stay in a hotel.
Sept 2nd spend all day in Rupert then catch the Alaska State Ferry at 6:15pm
Sept 3rd at sea and stopping in different Alaska ports
Sept 4th arrive in Skagway in the afternoon.
Would be a one way trip then meet up with my folks then tour Alaska then I would drive back or fly back.
or option 2 would be
take ferry from Bellingham on the 29th Friday leaving at 6:15pm then spend Saturday Sunday on the ferry and arrive at Skagway on the Monday. This one costs more though.
This is what I have been thinking of doing recently. I thought this would be a cool trip to take. Any thoughts?? Any info on Alaska State Ferries??

Karl,
Does it cost more even when you factor in the cost of hotel rooms in Port Hardy & Rupert?
I like your ideas, here, BTW.

Plus I have to get to Port Hardy. I cant drive as I wouldent be coming back that way. So either bus or fly and by far bus is the cheapest right now. Although I would have to get to Bellingham if I went from there too so either way I have to get there. Bellingham I wouldent need to stay over though as I could get there in a day.

Staying on the ferry was cheaper than a hotel and cab fare for me. Not sure about recently.
