A ferry ride between Gabriola Island and the Lower Mainland (probably Iona) would be about 45 minutes ...and then we learned from the Fast Ferry Fiasco.

well the fast ferries plan was a good idea, it was just poorly executed! Many problems contributed to the failure of the Fast Cat program.

...and then we learned from the Fast Ferry Fiasco. If your point is that aiming for the fastest, shortest route is not always the best policy, I would tend to agree. Environmental, logistical, geological, and community concerns can trump the directness factor. Look at the ferry map of Europe, where a huge number of long runs connect large centers, as opposed to connecting the nearest points. The EU even has a subsidy program specifically for routes which take commercial traffic off highways and help fight pollution and congestion. Duke Point to Tsawwassen was not the most obvious choice for a third crossing if you just peruse a map, but there were valid reasons for it being chosen.
