The ships they crossed the oceans with are quite small not all like we invisage in our minds. My parents were in Newfoundland when the Matthew arrived after crossing the Atlantic. When I saw pics it was mind boggling that anyone was brave enough to go venturing in storms in these small ships. No wonder so many died in passages.

Nina will be coming over to Victoria for the Tall Ships Festival, June 26-29, 2008. Bounty will be here as well. Bounty was here in the inner harbor promoting the Film, Mutiny on the Bounty starring Marlon Brando and Trevor Howard.
Mock Cannon battles will take place, at the waterfront on Dallas road at night. I hope that it won't be too busy with other boats in the water like 3 years ago, the Tall Ships had a hard time Maneuvering.

I'm using this existing thread for ongoing news & discussion about tall-ship visits to our local areas and related events. This was prompted by my reading today about events planned for Tofino in 2011 regarding the 200th anniversary of the Tonquin incident. Here's a news story on it: www.westcoaster.ca/tofino/10400-Tonquins-History-Taking-Shape-Clayoquot-Sound.html- excerpt about work done to restore an anchor, and some of 2011 plans. - it will be interesting to see if the Lady Washington replica ship travels up to Haida Gwaii. There's some bad history between that historical ship and the Haida people....
