Here are some photos I took when I was up at Lopez Island a couple weeks ago. These sunset photos are taken from Lopez Village. Sunset by compdude787, on Flickr Closeup of the setting sun by compdude787, on Flickr Sunset by compdude787, on Flickr I think this is one of the best photos I've ever taken: Sailboat and sunset by compdude787, on Flickr Zoomed-out a little bit: Sailboat and sunset by compdude787, on Flickr I posted this one in the Elwha thread already, but when I took it, I had no idea there was a ferry in my photo. I'm just disappointed that the ferry wasn't really lit up; otherwise I would have had a winning photograph for the flagship contest. As it is, the ferry is hard to see and as a result may not be eligible for the flagship contest. (I'll have to see what John thinks, though) Sunset scene by compdude787, on Flickr The next day, we drove to the south end of the island and hiked up Chadwick Hill. Later we hiked to Iceberg Point, on the SW corner of Lopez Island. This is the view of Watmough Bay (located in the SE part of Lopez Is.) from Chadwick Hill: Watmough Bay by compdude787, on Flickr Here's another one of my favorite photos showing a sailboat moored in Watmough Bay (located in the SE part of Lopez Is.) with Mt. OK, here are some of my photos from some well-known landmark sites in Washington DC. First up is the US Capitol Building. I've wanted to see this American icon for a very long time and finally got to last week. It's a very impressive building. Unfortunately, the tours are not so impressive. They are short and you only get to see the Rotunda (which is very cool, BTW), and catacombs underneath, and the Hall of Statues. You can get into the senate and house chambers by special permission from your local senator. It has to be set up through their office. We did not do that for this trip, but it might be worth it someday. The Capitol Visitor's Center is very impressive. It's underground, underneath the East Plaza, and houses a pretty good museum, worth seeing. The Visitor's Center is still pretty new, just built within the last 10 years. If any of you haven't been here, I totally recommend seeing the US Capitol, and the Library of Congress Building across the street. The US Capitol, as seen from the Capitol Reflecting Pool on the west side of the building steps up to the west side of The Capitol Building. They've roped them off now, which I was disappointed with. You used to be able to walk up those stairs. Southwest corner of The Capitol close-up detail of the dome Along the eastern side of The Capitol peek-a-boo view of the Capitol Dome from the grounds A view from inside The Rotunda looking up at the Fresco on the ceiling above Inside The Rotunda Detail of part of the Rotunda wall the very large underground US Capitol Visitor's Center. Natural light comes in through the large skylights in the East Plaza A filtered view of the Capitol Dome through the skylight of the Visitor's Center - makes for kind of a unique representation The Library of Congress, across the street from the US Capitol, is even more impressive in its architecture, especially the interior architecture. The US Capitol Building is grand in appearance from the outside - the Library of Congress is grand on the inside. Library of Congress building from the outside as seen from the Capitol East Plaza. The skylights are the Visitor's Center skylights And now, the inside of the Library of Congress. You can see what I mean about the inside being more impressive than the outside. This is "jaw-dropping" architecture here. A quick snapshot of some other notable DC sites "The Mall" as seen from the Capitol Reflecting Pool, with the iconic Washington Monument in the distance, completely encased in scaffolding, as they work to repair the damage from the earthquake a couple of years ago. Several places in DC were undergoing repairs from that earthquake, including Union Station and National Cathedral, two other sites we visited. The Washington Monument is closed until repairs are finished, so alas, we were not able to go into it. Lincoln Memorial The ceiling inside Lincoln Memorial The Mall looking east from Lincoln Memorial Looking west from Lincoln Memorial, you are greeted with the Arlington Memorial Bridge and a view of Arlington Cemetery across the Potomic River. The mansion up on the hill is inside the cemetery. It is called Arlington House, and was home to Robert E Lee, among others. Another view of The Arlington Memorial Bridge The Watergate complex made famous, of course, by the break-in which ultimately led to Richard Nixon's resignation in the face of certain impeachment. Jefferson Memorial No trip to DC would be complete without pics of The White House. We didn't get very close to the White House this trip, but I did manage to get a couple of photos from afar And, lastly, Arlington National Cemetery, which is not in DC, but across the Potomic River in Arlington, Virginia. Tomb of The Unkown Soldier. It is always guarded I hope you all have enjoyed my impromptu photographic tour of American icons in our nation's capitol. It was a really fun trip.

The things that you notice when you look around your location... On July 15, 2013, I was on the beach near Miners Bay on Mayne Island. I saw an interesting rock, so I zoomed in with my camera. Next day at home, I did some research to find out what it meant. The rock that I saw: - this view looks towards the north-east entrance to the pass The rock is under the trees, on the right side of the photo Here is a close-up, to read what is written on the rock: "1904 - HMS Egeria" This was a Royal Navy ship which did marine chart surveys of the British Columbia coast, between years 1898 and 1910. For more information, read here: www.nauticapedia.ca/Articles/Hydrography_on_the_BC_Coast.php

Has anyone started using Adobe Lightroom 5 yet? If so, how much does it differ from 4? I am wondering if it is worth the upgrade.

I found an old postcard of Vancouver in a box of my stuff recently uncovered. I'm not sure where it came from, but it looks like it might be 1960's era. It's really interesting to see what False Creek looked like before Expo, the Olympics, and all the condos you see now.

It's really interesting to see what False Creek looked like before Expo, the Olympics, and all the condos you see now. If you were to take a postcard of the same era of Seattle, the city would still be recognizable. It took me quite a bit of studying to figure out what is what in this postcard. The development in Vancouver has made the city hardly recognizable.

Thompson River sunrise, enjoyed by me near Martel, on Sept.13, 2013. Here is the still, looking south. - CN track on the near bank of the river. I love how part of the valley is sun-lit, and part is still in shadows Here is my 20x sped-up video where I try to show the shrinking shadows in the valley.

A Quadra Island assortment of Autumn photography. All from October 13, 2013. 6:09pm at Heriot Bay on the island's east side - I am entertained by the changing light on the coast mountains and the passing small craft, as I wait for Tenaka. -------------- An hour or so later, and I'm at the east shore of the island, looking at Campbell River, across Discovery Passage. And look what difference 11 minutes makes in these next 2 shots of the same scene. - 7:18pm - 7:29pm

Here is a video of clips that I shot on a visit to Butchart Gardens, Oct.20, 2013. - this "world famous" tourist attraction is on the Saanich Peninsula, not far from the Brentwood Bay ferry, north of Victoria, BC. I'm always impressed with this place. Excellence oozes everywhere. The gardens are immaculate and everything seems perfect. A place of quality workmanship. ...in other words, I highly recommend anyone to visit this place. And if you are into photography, prepare to have a fabulous time. Webpage here

Last night was the annual Cloverdale Christmas Parade. Out of all the parades this is the only one I attend every year because a) who doesn't love seeing everything all lit up? b) I wander around the staging area, away from the crowds and c) it's not as busy This was also the perfect chance to test out by new D600, and I was VERY impressed! I also got to use a Nikon 28-70mm f2.8 (borrowed from a friend who shoots a lot of weddings), which is a total tank, but a beautiful piece of glass CWC_9438 by BusShots, on Flickr CWC_9499 by BusShots, on Flickr CWC_9551 by BusShots, on Flickr
