I'm not certain, but I think I just saw this ship leaving Astoria, Oregon headed down the Columbia River toward the ocean. I took a picture from the Washington side, but it was so far away it's hard to make out. Anyone know if it could have been the Noordam?

...and here's HAL Noordam leaving Vancouver yesterday evening. You can also see the Norwegian Jewel in this pic. Yesterday was pretty much the end of the cruise ship season for Vancouver, aside from the few ships calling in October, November, and December. HAL Noordam and Norwegian Jewel by DeckCadet, on Flickr

Thanks Flugel. I wish I had a good camera with me. The sun was starting to do down and the water was very still...it would have been an excellent shot if I would have had something more than my iPhone.

MV Nieuw Amsterdam is HAL's Saturday ship on the Vancouver-Alaska cruise route for this year (I'm presuming she's the "Saturday ship" for the whole season). Here she is on Saturday evening, April 30, 2016, working her way up Georgia Strait, seen from a beach in Lantzville BC. DSC02096 by Mike Bonkowski, on Flickr

Mr Horn: I don't mean to be insulting toward Nanaimo- truly- but I'm curious about the reason for this visit, considering that the previous stop for this vessel was Victoria, fulfilling the 'Jones Act' protocol.
Given the unfortunate demise of the Nanaimo Daily News, there is something of a paucity of reportage involving local affairs, but is there any indication as to how many passengers are actually getting off cruise ships during their infrequent visits to the Hub City?

Some of the passengers were getting bused to Port Alberni, to ride the steam train & to visit McLean Mill. None were trying to visit me. I know that Nanaimo only gets "scraps on the floor" ie. a few visits on shoulder season odd re-positioning trips. Nanaimo also markets hard to get those visits. I'm not sure why Royal Caribbean did this, other than to add a couple days to their itinerary.

She was on a 4 night round trip out of Seattle with stops in Victoria Nanaimo and a day at sea today before returning to Seattle to start the Alaska season. As far as passenger capacity she might be big but the Solstice is actually bigger in length at 1041' the Explorer is 1025' in length!

The Explorer of the Seas may be one of the new mega cruise ships too tall to go under the Lions Gate Bridge. As such, a mini cruise out of Seattle has to go elsewhere. So, Victoria & Nanaimo ... If Nanaimo wants more cruise ships the solution is simple. Separate from BC (some think that idea has merit) & join Alaska ...

Royal Caribbean's Explorer of the Seas departing Nanaimo on May 18, 2016.
It was a lovely day for the tourists, and then it rained after the ship departed.

So apparently the Celebrity Infinity hit the dock this morning in Ketchikan in high winds while trying to dock resulting in some damage to the ship and the dock. This is a video someone took! She is one of my favorite ships as I had the best cruise on this ship back in 2010 through the Panama Canal. I dont know her current position as she is suppose to be underway by now but seascanner shows her still in Ketchikan.
One news item I found on this
The Celebrity cruise ship Infinity hit Ketchikan’s Berth 3 dock this afternoon, damaging the ship and dock. Harbormaster Steve Corporon said Berth 3 sustained $2 million to $3 million in damage. That includes the barge that acts as a dock and two of the three mooring dolphins. Corporon said the dock will not be usable until it’s repaired, which could take at least a month. He said he’ll have a better idea after an engineer’s inspection this weekend. The Infinity was moved to Berth 2. There’s no word yet about the amount of damage. The Coast Guard will determine whether it’s safe to sail. The visible damage was above the waterline and the ship did not appear to be taking on water or listing. Witnesses and Corporon said they saw no indication of injuries. Longshoreman and others on the dock were able to get off before the ship struck.

My wife and I sailed on this ship on its next trip, which left Vancouver June 5th. When we got to Canada place, they were painting over the big dent on the side of the vessel. It didn't appear to delay them at all... I guess there was no significant damage. When we got to Ketchikan, it looked as though repairs were in full swing on the berth...

Mr Horn: Your latest photo shows the Star Princess docked in Nanaimo. Over the last couple of years, what's been more the norm with the handful of cruise visits- docking, or riding at anchor in the harbour?

Mr Horn: Your latest photo shows the Star Princess docked in Nanaimo. Over the last couple of years, what's been more the norm with the handful of cruise visits- docking, or riding at anchor in the harbour? 100% docking, because we have a dock. Docking is much simpler than anchoring the ship and tendering the passengers. We don't have multiple-ship-days in Nanaimo, so there is no need to compete for the dock or to have one ship at anchor. The dock's terminal building has the security screening equipment, the MARSEC signage and fences, etc, and is a good gateway where tour buses can meet the passengers. It's the first time that I've ventured down dockside to see the ship depart or arrive.

Keep your eyes open in the future for Mighty ships on Discovery Channel. The Celebrity Solstice was featured on last night's program. They were in Australia though.
