The 114-foot high-speed catamaran Ocean Spirit II was unveiled Wednesday morning following $2 million in upgrades completed over the past two years in the boatyard at the foot of Trites Road in Steveston.
Owned by Walter Cadwallader, the sleek 1,200-horsepower twin-hulled vessel can accommodate 168 passengers and will be available for charter rental for corporate events, weddings and special event tours.
Built in Japan by the Yamaha Corporation in 1988, the ship served as a passenger ferry when it was purchased two years ago from Jakarta, Indonesia.
Since then, the seating has been reconfigured, new seats and tables have been installed, as well as new washrooms and other interior upgrades, including the addition of a bar and refrigerator that will enable it to serve a buffet-style dinner.
The Ocean Spirit II is still undergoing renovations, and should be completed in the next two or three months.
When completed, passengers will have access to a wrap-around balcony on the ship’s top level, a dance floor and a new stereo sound system.
Doug Challoner of Steveston Maritime Adventures said the Britannia Heritage Shipyard will serve as home port for the vessel, which will mainly do charter trips between Vancouver and Victoria.
The Ocean Spirit II is capable of cruising at 24 knots, with a top speed of 30 knots, and provides a smooth ride.
“It’s like having two canoes over the water,” Challoner said of the catamaran’s twin-hull configuration.
