Are you ready for something different for October's flagship contest? OK, here's what we'll be doing during September 08, re the October-08 Forum Flagship:
=========================
The theme:
- The photographic work of Mr. David Thorne. If you own "The Ships of British Columbia" book (Bannerman), you can read about David on page-133 of that book.
- The photographs that are eligible for nomination are any of David Thorne's ship photos, located in a special photo-bucket account (address listed later in this post). So this slate of nominations could include ferries of various companies & liveries & eras, as well as some Prince/Princess ships. The common-denominator is the photographer, Mr. David Thorne.
- Here's what forum-member "WCK" had to say about his brother, in a forum interview, from June 2007:
- Here's what famed forum contributor "Biff Fisticuffs" had to say about David Thorne, when he was guessing if member "West coast" (ie. "WCK") was related to David, back in an August 2006 forum post:
- Suffice it to say that David Thorne is one of the most respected ship photographers (and sketch artists) on the BC Coast, and expecially re his collection of BC Ferries photos. David's love of the pre-2003 BC Ferries look is evidenced in his many works of photographic art.
---------------------------
The pool of photographs:
- nominations will be chosen from member "Wet Coast Kid"'s photo-bucket account page of "DOT banners". As some/most of us may know, Wet-Coast-Kid (WCK) is one of David Thorne's younger brothers. WCK has scanned many of David's wonderful historic/current photographs and has cropped many of them to banner-size. This selection of banner-sized David pictures is what we will be choosing our nomination's from. WCK is adding more banner-sized pics to this account over the next few days (first week of September).
Here's the photo-bucket page, which is our official pool of potential nominations:
s90.photobucket.com/albums/k268/wetcoastkidjst/DOT%20Banners/
(note: there is more than 1 page on this photobucket account: scroll to bottom to see link to "Page 2")
- all of these pics in this Photo-bucket account are already sized for banner-display in this thread, ie. 800px wide.
- No text is displayed on the banner pics, and none is needed. Our new forum-skin header & logo makes the old "welcome to the forum...." text on a banner-pic redundant.
----------------------
The nominating process:
- You, the member, can peruse the above-noted photo-bucket account, and find a picture that you'd like to nominate.
Nominate it here in this thread, by doing the following:
- In your reply to this thread, include the image of your chosen pic. On WCK's photo-bucket page, after you've clicked on a specific ship banner, see the right-hand side of your screen and cut/paste the IMG-code onto your forum reply. (yes, that same IMG code is displayed under each banner pic in the photo-bucket thumbnail view page too).
- In your reply where you've pasted the nominated pic, you must summon up some words to describe why you've nominated that particular picture. "I wanted to" and "It's nice" are not sufficient responses ;D. Part of this exercise is to see and record what David Thorne's legacy of photographs means to each of us, and this is your opportunity to articulate that, on a photo-by-photo basis.
How many pictures can each member nominate?
- I'm not sure right now.....it depends on how many pics get nominated overall in the next few weeks. ie. if there are lots of nominations (ie. > 20), then maybe we limit to 1 (or 2 if you feel strongly about more than 1 pic) per member. But if we get near the prelim-ballot deadline (see below re that) and there is only a "small number" of pictures nominated so far, then we will allow more nominations from each interested member. So it all depends on how broad or narrow the range of responding members is to this nominating-process. We will all be able to see how this is going, as the days progress between now and September 23rd.
------------------------
The September 23-24th preliminary "choose your 5 favourite" ballot:
- At Noon (PDT) on September 23rd, we will close nominations.
- I will set up a preliminary-ballot, with approx 24 hours of voting to run from afternoon-evening on Sept.23 to that of Sept.24.
- The purpose of this prelim ballot is to narrow the nomination field down to 5 pictures.
- We will be using a new feature on this ballot-poll to allow each voter to choose up to 5 different nominations on this prelim-poll.
- After the results of the Sept.23-24 prelim-ballot are determined, the kind&helpful member WCK will take the 5 finalists and do the edit work to create full-size banners for each of the 5. That way, when we do our final voting (see next item below), each person can view the full-size banner to see what the effect of each of the final-five will be.
--------------------
The September 29-30th final ballot:
- We will have approx 24 hours of voting for a final ballot of the five-finalists. I will set up this poll sometime in the evening of September 29th, and will run the poll for approx 24 hours, with the winner being declared sometime in the evening on September 30th.
- The new banner will then be displayed starting October 1st.
==========================
.....I told you it was going to be different.
Here are a few responses to anticipated questions/comments:
- Yes, I realize that this is different, but it's only 1 month.
- Yes, I realize that the Q-Tsawwassen hasn't been featured as a theme yet, and she's ending her life.......but that can be done in another soon-to-come month.
- Yes, I realize that the pervasiveness of the word "banner" in the photo-bucket account may cause problems for some, but that's the way it is.
================
A big thanks to member Wet-Coast-Kid for doing the work of banner-sizing and arranging all these wonderful pictures.
A big thanks to Mr. David Thorne for his dedication and skill in giving us a legacy of views to admire and cherish.
A big thanks to each member who participates in this exercise, to take the time to browse the photos and to think about why you like a certain item.

How did you brother Dave's photos and drawings impact your own interest in ferries, and in their images?
Very large influence – David is a gifted artist. He has been drawing ships of our part of the world since the 1950’s. He probable has one of the best marine libraries in Canada. He has contributed to several books and magazine articles, including Janes’ Merchant Ships… A very huge influence.

I'm taking a chance here, but I'm pretty certain the "DOT" collection stands for: "David 'O Thorne" Longtime artist & historian with BCF. He's even mentioned in Bannerman's book.
Do you actually know David, Westcoast, or at least have ties to him? If you DO, then you will no-doubt have an UNBELEIVABLE source for old pics & drawings from back in the day:)
