And voting is now over re the prelim ballot. I've started a separate, new thread for the fantastic five, so that's where we can make comments on those 5 top-rated pics. ferriesbc.proboards20.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=flagship&thread=4229-------------------- Re the other pics in the prelim round, please feel free to make comments here in this existing thread....... Thanks for participating. ps: How did you like the process? I noticed that the requirement of "saying a little bit about why you were nominating a certain pic" was sometimes ignored, but I suppose people will have more to say about the final-5, in that new thread. Also, did you like the secret ballot? Or do you prefer to know the score before you vote?

I like the secret ballot better myself. I noticed that the results this time were much more spread out between the "contenders" than they usually are. This could be from the secret ballot, but it could also be because every one of those photos is amazing.

I'm casting two votes, those being # 3 and # 13. To keep this post short, I will address Mr. Thorne's work at a later time, explaining my choices briefly: For # 3. The Sunshine Coast Queen was the forerunner of pure double-enders to serve in the BC Ferry fleet, and as we have seen history unfold, from the Tsawassen, Sidney, V class ships etc, we see BC Ferries come full circle with the introduction of the Oak Bay, Surrey, etc, then veer off course again to the Spirit ships, to finally come back to our new Coastal double-enders. Hail the Pere Nouvel for starting the trend. ...AND if my memory serves me correctly, David Thorne, seaman with BCF at the time was part of the crew that went to Quebec to fetch the old girl and bring her 'round to BC waters. For choice # 13: Although I worked on her sister the 'Sidney, I guess the opportunity to salute how it was.....way back when, in the good...and bad old days of the BC Ferry Authority to me as a young 19 year-old, is very special for just as there has been thousands of miles of water pass under the hulls of those first two "home-built" BC Ferries, I've had a few miles of sea pass under this old hull too. Ah, those were the days

The secret ballot would seem to deliver results that we personal choices and votes didn't pile up for one picture or another, based on other folks votes.

I would agree with starsteward about the secret ballot creating a personal choice. Quite often if I am stuck between two pictures with one having a lot more votes I will vote for it to go along with the crowd. Also, I like having to give an explanation as to why you chose/submitted the picture because there are some interesting stories behind some pictures; and may sway my vote if that person had to go to great lengths to get that picture.

I like the secret ballot for the preliminaries since it adds some suspense as to what pictures will come out on top, perhaps we could give it a try on the final? It is whatever works Mr. Horn, I will go with whatever works.
Anyways, I choose #2, #13, and #17.
#2, I love the dogwood colour scheme and the Esquimalt was a classic, one of the best things in the DOT collection is the quality of pictures from the good days of BCFS
#13 Extremely great balance and a classic picture of the Queen of Tsawwassen (sadly miss her now), the scenery is also great of Mayne Island in the background.
#17 Another superb photo this time of the Nanaimo. I like her in the classic pastel blue colour and another Gulf Island shot.
I felt that the shots within the Gulf Islands were some of the best, these were all fairly good shots but those three really stood out to me as great photos.

I think we should have a secret ballot every month... that is the proper way to take an important vote, isn't it? Another thing though, is that we might want to shy away from picking pictures of the Tsawwassen since so many people have Tsawwassen signatures right now.

Technically if you want a TRUE result, you must eliminate the lowest voted pic one at a time until you have the winning pic. The reason I say this is because if the pics that are eliminated had their votes redistributed, that could change the selection of the winning pic.
