Here are the top-5 flagship choices resulting from the preliminary ballot. These 5 pictures will be on a ballot at the end of September and then the winner will be our October forum flagship. ======================= #1, with 23 votes, is pic #13: #2, with 21 votes, is pic #5: #3 with 18 votes, is pic #7 #4 with 16 votes, is pic #2 #5 with 16 votes, is pic #3 =========== (and now for the cat-herding part of the message....) One request, re the final ballot voting at month's end: - Please remember the original theme of October's flagship, which is to honour the photographic work of Mr. David Thorne, which included images of many different ships. - By coincidence, the much loved (by some) ship Q-Tsawwassen retired in September, so this ship is on the minds of some. - Please realize that there are many months in the year, and monthly themes focused solely on the original Sidney and/or Tsawwassen ships will likely occur each year for the future in this forum. - So please don't feel the need to turn this month's David Thorne theme into a Tsawwassen-theme based on that ship's recent retirement. I'd still like you to vote for what you think is the best work of Mr. Thorne, regardless of the ship and regardless of which ship was just retired. That's the criteria for "This month's" vote. Thanks. ----------------- Now, for those who want to lobby for a particular ship, from the above 5, for the October flagship choice, please do so in this thread. Just ensure that your reasons are something other than the historical significance of the ship itself (or to be more blunt, that the reason is something other than the fact that it's the now-retired Queen of Tsawwassen ;D ). Please explain your compelling reasons to vote for your favourite, based on your impression of Mr. Thorne's artwork. What is it about David's work that makes the picture a winner??

It was a tough choice for me, because I like them all.
But I think I'm going with Number 5, of the Sunshine Coast Queen. I think this photo is worth my vote, because not only is quite the historical image of the vessel itself, it shows why we love photos of D.O.T. because of their crisp quality. To the untrained eye, one would think that the photo was taken just the other day from the end of the Horseshoe Bay pier. Therefore, because it's a photo you wouldn't see everyday, it deserves to be forum flagship for October.

Scott / Jordan: Is this okay? I'm assuming that it is ok to leave as is. Or does he need to do the substitution?

Scott / Jordan: Is this okay? I'm assuming that it is ok to leave as is. Or does he need to do the substitution? Resize it slightly if you need to: that one was my nomination, and there was a reason I picked it over the other one of the Susy-Q. This one was just composed slightly better and gave a clearer image of the ship. In the other one, I believe the tips of masts were left off and the ship completely filled the space without any background framing on the sides to offset her as a focal point.

Boy oh boy, this was one of the harder ones.
I enjoyed my choice because of it's epic background. The snow on the hillside really cool, and with a now-retired ferry in expo colours, I feel like we, as a group should be paying tribute to her for the month.
My choice is Picture 7, Queen of Tsawwassen

This is a tough decision.
I was originally thinking of going with the #5, the one of the ships being re-painted at Deas, however with the Queen of Tsawwassen's recent retirement, I think it is appropriate to pay tribute to her. Now being a snow-lover and the fact it doesn't fall very often around these parts, I think D.O.T has captured an exceptional photo. Therefore, my choice is Picture #7 of the Queen of Tsawwassen.

My picks were 13, 7, and 2. Number 13 was my favourite, because the lighting in the photo is amazing. The way the sun is hitting the 'Tsawwassen really accentuates the white in the expo colour scheme, and helps create a very crisp, clean look. Also, the setting in the SGI embodies what BCF is all about, in my opinion. To me, Route 1 and SGI service is BC Ferries, mostly because I have grown up in the Victoria area and those are the routes I am most familiar with.
I am not picking this photo because it is the 'Tsawwassen, rather, because it embodies what BCF represents to me. Actually, I liked the similar shot of the Spook (#12) better, but apparently not many others agreed with me on that one.

I know Flug said that there will be other opportunities to honor the Tswwassen - however the timing plus the unique and rare fact of the snow cover makes it a winner for me. So my vote is for #3 that was orginally number #7.

Maybe the votes for the 2 Tsawwassen pics will cancel each other out, and one of the 3 lesser-loved ship pics will sneak in as the winner.... ;D ps: I was going to run this category earlier in 2008 when it was previously my turn at choosing the criteria, and this idea got postponed because of the sudden retirement of the Steel-Electrics, and so I agreed to switch the month's idea to instead honour the Steel-E's. Looks like sentiment is trumping my plans once again.....damn that sentiment. ha ha

Tough choice, but I'm going with pic #5 because it shows the changing over from the pastel blue to the Expo 86 scheme (with the QotN having partial pastel blue and partial Expo schemes).

Without question. The combination of having 4 different class ships as well as two different paint schemes has made me feel that it's worthy of being a flagship banner. I have really liked that one since the first time I saw it. It's also much more unique than some of the single boat pictures. . .something we don't see too often for a forum flagship.

I, too, am very partial to pic 2, taken around about 1985 when my brother was sneaking around at Deas getting pictures of the boats in for their annual refits and repainting. This must have been quite something to see in person.
For those of you inclined to pick a pic of the Tsawwassen, do so if you must, but my advice is to choose the best photo overall. This month's theme is not, as Flugel has tried to make as clear as possible, a month to honour the old girl. Also, keep in mind that the Tsawwassen served as our flagship in June 2007, and her sister the Sidney has graced our header twice since then. You might say that the Sidney class has been well represented. Perhaps we will have a month very soon to honour the Tsawwassen - one of the originals and BC Ferries' longest serving vessel.

Okay, I'll say it... there's been precious little posted on this board in the last two months that didn't have to do with the Tsawwassen, and I'm just about sick to the teeth with it. I'll be voting for something else. Anything else. ;D

I will admit to not having a lot of time lately for anything online -- but I did agonize for a while over the sheer number of quality photos that were originally available to choose from. There were quite a number of photos taken from a unique perspective that, even in a forum where members are posting many photos from many points of view, these were some great pictures.
Number 2 stands out for me, since we not only have a nice historical selection of ferries not often seen together, they are viewed from an angle that somehow eliminates the chain-link fence also usually seen in the foreground. It's a nice and clear Winter scene that showcases some of BC Ferries finest examples.
Number 3, of course, showcases a scene not often seen by many, much less the occasional BC visitor like myself. It is rare that we see our ships in a Winter setting like this, in a scene where you can really see the boat moving through the clear water. I can't even tell without looking very closely which sister that is a picture of. But I do know that the photo makes me want to be on that there ferry.
Number 5 is probably my favorite, as it clearly showcases a rarely photographed ship in a setting that could be Summertime anywhere in Beautiful British Columbia (or at least the good part!) If you want a historical ship, you have it here. If you want a sunny day, this will perk you up. And, as backgrounds go, this shows the beauty of the area without distracting you with wondering just which inlet the scene was photographed at.
While I could probably argue for any of these five photos, I think I will personally lean toward number 5. I am happy to have been able to peruse all of these artworks.
