Anyone notice that the Olympic Torch Relay will be including several ferry trips? The map and schedule are here: www.vancouver2010.com/dl/00/59/61/-/59616/prop=data/1w2dywd/59616.pdfThe ferry highlights include Day 5 (November 3) - Most likely a trip on the Kwuna from Alliford Bay to Skidegate. The torch will be flown to Sandspit.. then the next stop is Skidegate, so I figure it'll be on the ferry. Then the torch leaves town for a long time... and comes back on Day 84 (January 21). The next ferry trip will be on Day 96 (February 2) which is from Prince Rupert to Port Hardy with a stop in Bella Bella (the map locates it as Bella Coola but the scedule says it's Bella Bella). This will likely be the Northern Expedition... any other year it would probably be the Northern Adventure, but probably not in 2010. The torch then travels down island the next day to Comox I presume and crosses on the Queen of Burnaby to Powell River. The next day, Day 99, the torch will travel from Powell River to Squamish.. with its final two ferry trips... on the Island Sky from Saltery Bay to Earls Cove and from Langdale to Horseshoe Bay on the Queen of Surrey.

This actually brings back some memories for me - the 88 Olympics in Calgary. I was attending Shawnigan Lake School at that time, and we (the students) were given the challenge to run and/or walk to Mill Bay to see the Olympic Torch relay. It's a about a 5 mile trek from Shawnigan Lake out to Mill Bay. I remember running part of it, and walking part of it. It was late in the afternoon when the torch finally did pass through Mill Bay. Now, here we are, 20 years later, and Mill Bay will, once again, play host to the Olympic Torch relay (along with many other communities). Alas, I will not be there this time around.

I will for sure be catching the torch when it is nearby. I have a place to stay in North Van during the games but it is so far away still I am not sure whether I will be able to make it or not. The section of the run over to Tofino will be very interesting.
The energy in Calgary just before the Olympics was palpable. I was there the week before the Olympics, on a business trip staying at the Delta Bow Valley Hotel with the whole CTV media team. I had breakfast three days in a row sitting beside Teralyn Jo (the young ones won't remember this very pretty CTV Anchor). She went on to somewhere in the states I believe. It was actually quite depressing to leave after seeing all the venues and feeling the excitment in the city.

A friend of my father who works in media used to work with Terilyn Jo and keeps in contact with her. She is now in California State. She used to work at KGO in San Francisco and is now at KNTV in San Jose. She has also been in the odd movie as well. Information on her can be easily found on google and imdb.com.

She was very friendly and a class act when anchor. The whole CTV team was there and much the same. The breakfast buffet turned into one big family with everyone chatting with everyone else. I suppose they may have just assumed I was one of the network suits because I was in business attire. Years later I would see someone on TV that I recognized from the team and who had been promoted to the national network. Mind you much the same with many of the Canadian broadcasters I have met. Pamela Wallin was a regular on my flights to NYC when she was Consular General there. I have mentioned before the number of times I have met Ron McLean at charity events and then the whole hockey bunch at the Bayshore. Don Cherry was quite funny and normal in person . I used to see Lloyd Robertson at the Bayview cinemas a lot, but that one has closed now - and yes his hair is as poofy and the colour/shade appears to change from time to time in person too. The list goes on and with a very few exceptions all have been very friendly and normal. I know clearly the style I prefer on TV. I am waiting to see who the final cast is for the CTV coverage of the Olympics and will be very interested to see how it plays out. I am hoping they step up with the Torch Relay technology wise. GPS should enable live map tracking a la Siitech. Beep. Chase vehicles could even have periodic live uploads of videos via cell and satelite. Schools and interested individuals will be able to keep track. As extensive the route it would be great to see profiles of communities it travels to for the rest of us. Maybe the networks will have great tracking as well on their websites.

I missed one in my original post... Day 104 (Feb 10th) the torch will take a trip to Bowen Island... so add the Queen of Capilano to the list.

Because of my links and connections to Vancouver2010 and Vanoc, I met with the man organizing the Olympic Torch Relay. Very nice guy.
He has confirmed everything except for the Queen of Capilano... I didn't check with him on that.

No, no, no! That's a Spirit Class I think her name is the Spirit of 2010. 2nd Cousin of the SoBC and SoVI. Built a few years after the "Sleigh Boat" A.K.A. Spirit of Christmas. But before the the double-ended, Spirit of Northern British Columbia. I have one of those pins, they're really nice.

They have come out with some nice things among the usual brickbrack. I won't comment again on the mascots or the country of origin of the Bay's clothing line.
The Sea to Sky line of Hudson's Bay products is very nice. The take on the traditional Hudson's Bay blanket is one that looks great. It is one of those lifelong type gifts that get handed down to future generations. You have to, mind you based on the costs?
The ferry pin doesn't look bad at all - I would buy one and wear it on the ferry when the flame crosses the strait. I would imagine security on that sailing will be extremely tight.

Again, because of my connections to Vancouver 2010, I get all my pins with a discount, or for free. I have that ferry pin (I actually got that one for Curtis as a thank-you for the lift to Saltery Bay), and several other transportation-related pins, one of a SeaBus and one of a train on Howe Sound. I also have a Torch Relay pin, and I'm not 100% sure that they've released it...
