Here's a new entity in the BCFS body: (quote is from 12/31/2008 MD&A report) In September 2008, we established BCF Global Services Inc. (BCF Global) as a wholly owned subsidiary to provide consulting and management services both domestically and internationally.
BCF Global will take advantage of our expertise and long history in the marine transportation business to pursue new business opportunities relating to the development, operation and maintenance of ferry systems.
Questions: - What for? - Why? - Who will this serve? (I suppose this thread will get updated once every few months, so here it is, for the long-term discussion.....)

Two things come to mind: consulting, and managing ferry systems for local or national governments, as Hornblower Marine does for Trinidad&Tobago, Pierce County WA, and others. www.hornblowermarine.com/There are new ferry services in the Red Sea, for instance, which I doubt the governments themselves run. BC Ferries might find a lot of opportunities in running operations as well as terminal development and management.

Could that be a new revenue stream for BCF? I hope that's the case, 'cuz it could help in lowering fares domestically.

Thanks Neil, for the Hornblower link. I had forgotten about that group, and about the red-sea matter too.
It will be interesting to see what BCF-Global does. I think we might only find out 4 times a year during this corporate reporting on SEDAR. Or maybe they'll announce any contracts / agreements on the BCFS website as a news-release.
I wonder if this BCF-Global is something that the recently downsized BCFS will have trouble giving needed attention to, because of lack of management & resources.

This is what YVR does and I think it's an excellent idea. a Global leader in ferry service running ferry systems around the world (and maybe preventing some of those deadly ferry sinkings etc).

It will be interesting to see how well BCF does at the ferry consulting business. They have some very tough competitors in the Scandinavian operators and their shoreside partners. I think BCF exposure to Europe through working with FSG and having to track down a replacement for the Q of the N opened their eyes to new possibilities. They certainly wouldn't have much North American competition.
Some of the services offered by the Scandinavians include consulting for:
Ferry terminal design Vessel conceptual design (the Spirit's conceptual design I believe involved a Danish company) Terminal retailing On board retailing Signage systems including automated notice & information systems Green operational practices Ticketing and reservation systems Turnkey ferry operations including the provision of owned or leased vessels. Marketing and fare schemes Intermodal freight and passenger service designs.etc.
Many of the companies providing these services have web sites.

Many of the companies providing these services have web sites. As I run around and do other things with my online time, do you have the links handy for me to check out, so I don't have to google them myself?
