I've noticed this in the past few weeks on two of our newest vessels. Examine this photo of the Island Sky's car deck, what do you see?... Take a closer look... It's probably because of our wet weather and the fact that thousands of cars come on and off them every week, but this raises a interesting question; is completely painting the car decks a good idea? In my opinion, it looks like a waste of money. And it's not just the Island Sky that's showing it...

Wow - didn't take long for the paint to wear out there, did it? WSF also has painted car decks - sort of a teal green colour. The paint wears off on our vessels, too, although usually not as quickly as the paint job on Island Sky. Perhaps our vessels more enclosed car decks vs. Island Sky's more open deck helps preserve the paint just a little longer. Here are a couple of examples: Wenatchee's car deck in 2001, about 3 years after she entered service: you can definitely tell where the tire tracks are Here's Tillikum's car deck, taken last year. I don't know when she was last re-painted:

And it's not just the Island Sky that's showing it... The first two pics, it looks like maybe the primer coat was faulty in some way. That would explain why the paint is peeling like that. The third pic is more obvious. It's scraped to high heaven from the wheel chocks.

Hot tires in the summer heat do a lot of damage to the paint. The heat can cause the paint to "come unstuck" to use a nontechnical term. Also tires carry a lot of small rocks, stones and sand in the treads, that also grinds under the weight of the vehicle and is just like a slow sand blasting/sanding process. Once the scratching happens it speeds up the peeling from heat and the corrosion of the marine air. A certain someone in NJ will likely add his technical response in the morning. *Upon further reflection I wonder why a much more resilient coating such as those used on the deck of aircraft carriers isn't used. It is a rough nonslip surface and looks like a cross between fine asphalt and paint. I know they have to remove the rubber every so often, just like runways at the airport, from the friction of the tires hiting the deck. But I don't ever remember seeing any flake off or corrosion. Might be horribly expensive and add a lot of weight mind you and not worth it just for aesthetics. Mr. BCinNJ you have a research assignment/opporunity if you choose to take it. ** I was too impatient to wait until the morning . That's the color of the bare steel. No it's not... even that red color is still another layer of preservative paint applied to the steel plates. Bare steel looks like, well, bare steel. Kind of shiny, metallic and silvery, and if you leave it that way too long, it starts to turn all orange and fuzzy.

When I first rode the Island Sky roughly a month ago, it was definitely nothing special, and this certainly didn't help my first impression of her... and I see the situation hasn't exactly improved. I hope this warranty work actually takes care of it, and it doesn't turn into a half-job... It sort of looks like blood. That's nice....
