I was on the Oak Bay tonight. Seems like there's a few more dishes on the cafeteria menu. One was a vegetarian pasta. another was chicken wings, and one was a wild BC Salmon dish. I'm not sure how new these are, but I hadn't seen them before and it's only been a month or two since I was on that route.

Vegetarian pasta? Wild salmon?
I've got to commend BCFS on this one.
As sure as I am that it's motivated by the bottom line, and not necessarily ethics, I'm always happier when such an improvement is made by a corporation. Finally a company that realizes that to live by ethical standards in today's world requires more than lip service.
...It always cracks me up when vegetarians ( / people who apply their ethics to their daily lives) complain about taxes... Especially when those taxes are expressly for imiprovements such as transit.

Better try before you judge, sure the choice may be good, but bad taste may change your opinion.

Is this only on the Coastal Cafe Menus?

Better try before you judge, sure the choice may be good, but bad taste may change your opinion. If this new line of food tastes as good as their current 'Bread Garden' menu, then there won't be anyone complaining, to say the least.

Yeah. Well, I hear constant complaints about "ferry food" onboard their vessels. We'll see...

People have been making fun and complaining about ferry for many years, longer than HMCS Nanaimo has been around

My earliest memory of BC Ferry food, is the "toasted cheese sandwich", served in the dining-room on a B-Class on Route 2, in the mid-1970's.
My first complaint was likely to my Mom, as I probably wanted to have a hamburger instead.

The food on the ferries is way better now that they have Bread Garden White Spot and Villiges Pizza. I dont have breakfast alot on the ferries as I usually arent travelling around that time but the breakfasts are good. Still the Sunshine Breakfast was a favorite!

When I was on the Queen of Tsawwassen last year I had breakfast. It was bacon, toast, hashbrown and something else. It was suprisingly good!

First time I had food onbaord a Canadian vessel was onboard the Spirit of Vancouver Island, a slice of pizza and a mineral water. Pizza was delicous though, couldn´t complain. Also the other stuff people had did not look horrible, and it was for a reasonable price too. Only thing I could say that if you had taken a full meal, the portion would have been too big to eat actually.

How would food on a BC Ferry, differ from food anywhere else? The only time I complained about food on the ferries, was the time I was on the 8:30 sailing out of Nanaimo on Oak Bay, way back in '98. The eggs were overcooked, and tasted burnt. But I can't understand why people always just assume because you're on a ferry, and assume the food is horrible. I think that's more of a joke, because it doesn't matter what time of the day I'm on the ferry, there's always, a huge lineup for the food, from the beginning of the sailing, till the crew has to tell everyone to get off the ferry cause they've docked. But to be honest, I'm not all that fussy anymore about the Triple O's Menu. The BC Burger always ends up falling apart, and the grease dribbles down my arm, but that's ok, it tastes pretty good, when I'm in the mood for it. I think the worst decision they ever made, was changing the type of fries they used, when it was just called, "The Cafeteria". Those were the best fries, better than Mcdonalds. The White Spot fries just end up burning my tongue, and I can only eat a few until I'm overfull. Oh well, what can you do. As it turns out, I kind of just went on about how the fries burn my tongue, and how greasy the burger is, after I said the food was good...But I'm just glad there's some sort of food service available onboard, because the vending machines sell nothing but junk. I must say, nobody can make a better sticky bun, than BC Ferries. I'm sure everyone who was involved on that trip on the Esquimalt back in May remembers the two trips to the Cafeteria I made....

Yeah, the Vending Machine stuff is 'crap. Tell it to the people at Duke Point.
I like a nice Belgium Waffle on a ferry, I always manage to finish it, I'm always full, and tastes great!
In terms of Dinner, my BC Burger always manages to satisfy my hunger, after 64% of the Triple O sauce makes its way down my shirt and on to my pants, creating a large stain.
The best meal I've ever had? Dinner on the Tsawwassen, returning from Galiano, with a Bacon Cheese burger, and fries with a large Coke. Only the best at "The Cafeteria."
Of course, you can never say no to a slice of Villages Pizza.

Often when I get Breakfast on the Tsawwassen or Burnaby it's the Breakfast Bunwich. Other Times on the Tsawwassen it's now tradition I buy a Nanaimo Bar. Last Time I was on the Tsawwassen I Bought Beef Dip for dinner but I didn't forget the Nanaimo Bar But the Beef Dip was pretty good. Often on the Bigger Ferries Like the Coquitlam I get a BC Burger and Recently I got some flavored water and some of that Soft Serve Ice Cream. However on the Bigger Ferries I found out they Changed the Bunwich to look like a Egg McMuffin. Was Still good just I think the Egg is Better Scrambled.

On the way back we had some coffee and that was also good. If the food on the "Spirits" is not extraordinary better than on the other BC-ferries I can say, it´s not any better, or any worse than on our European ships despite of course we do have different stuff, your ferry-menues remind me more in what you get here at Pizza-Hut or Mac Donalds.

CAUTION FERRY FOOD AHEAD!! lol! j/k. But for those of you who dident know that was an actual sign they had on the Pat Bay Highway at Blackies Cafe, is what it used to be called. Now it's a east indian cafe, lol! I remember how pissed off that made me seeing that sign that said Caution Ferry Food Ahead. I think they were doing it to be funny! But the ferry food has improved alot since then.

The menu you speak of is the new " Coastal Sensations" menu... It features four new dishes added to the current selection in the cafeteria. I have been told other than the prep time to make them, that they are very good and the portions are quite generous...

"Ferry food" in BC - it seems to be the equivalent to our Motorest foods here - what you can get at the motorway-reststations I am though not so sure whether the idea to eat wild salmon is sooo good - I mean, if everyone would do that, there would soon not be much of the wild salmon left over. However, I know that the other alternative is "a bit" antibiotics- and other stuff polluted.

The Chicken and Prawn Sir-Fry seems good, I'll have to try it the next time I'm on a BCF.
