Departure Bay is in need of some expansion. Should it be expanded on land or out into the Bay a bit? Do you think that it needs to have two layers of holding like HSB? Would a transit deck be feasable? Does the geography and geology allow for the work? What would be integrated into the terminal building for passengers walking aboard and taking their vehicles?
Or would it be better to move to Duke Point? Would a better freeway connection be necessary? Is it feasable with the location? What modifications would be needed to make it more than just a ferry terminal?

Well, we know Departure Bay is getting expanded pretty soon. It's going to get changed around Again, for yet more new Ferries. This time it's the Super C's of course. Berth 2 is getting modified for the Super C's, and the terminal holding lot is getting expanded out into the bay. That means they will be demolishing the long foot passenger walkway, and probably making it an above ground walkway, similar to Tsawwassen, so cars will be able to access the new part of the terminal. There is no way in hell they would make a nice big Freeway to Departure Bay. It just so happens to be located right smack dab Downtown Nanaimo. If Departure Bay was to ever move to Duke Point, they would have to make that point into a similar terminal like Tsawwassen. Nobody would agree with doing that, so Departure Bay is definitely getting expanded out into the bay. The road to it will likely remain the same, forever. The only change I could see them doing to it, is putting a median all of the way through it.

I was thinking the same thing. It will be alot of work, but it's very much needed, considering the amount of traffic that goes through there during the peak season.
