I remember back before 1965, the family went on a ferry tour of the Gulf Islands. The ferry left Swartz Bay in the morning and then went to each Gulf Island and in the afternoon returned to Swartz Bay. We were foot passengers and the ferry had a snack bar. It was a nice day trip, and it was very sunny.
At each Island cars were loaded and unloaded on to the ferry.

Can you remember what ferry it was? Maybe the Mayne Queen when it was new?

You know it could have been one of the Tsawwassen Swartz Bay Ferries...Maybe it was one of the Purchased Gulf Island Navigation Company Ferries

Maybe a trip we (as in the forum) could do next summer... a Gulf Island Discovery Day trip. Something to think about.

I am not 100% certain, but it was not the Queen of the Islands. The Q of I did run out of Swartz Bay, and Dad talked about her a lot. There was another ship that was based at Swartz Bay that did go to some of the islands and that was the ship I was on. It was definitely a BC Ferry, Mom had found out about the trip, while looking at the BC Ferry Schedule pamphlet. I think that the BC Ferries had just bought the Gulf Island Navigation Company.
The snack bar and the passenger seating area was very small, I ended up sitting outside on the deck for most of the trip.
Someone had posted a picture of Swartz Bay Terminal in 1965 on this site. By 1965, the Gulf islands dock was located inside the terminal. When we went between 1960 and 1965 the dock was located outside the terminal. In that picture the dock that was used was not visible in that picture. The dock was near the end of the parking area, and when we got off the ferry we had to walk toward the main terminal to get to the car. Does anyone know if this dock was taken down or is this the dock that the freight barge docks at?
What was the color scheme of the Gulf Island Navigation Company ferries?

Not the Q of the Islands. It was based out of Long Harbour and did a route similar to that done by Q of Nanaimo today. To my knowledge it never ran out of Swatz Bay. Could have been the Mayne Q, maybe the Pender Queen [ex. Motor Princess], or other ex Gulf Is. Ferry company vessel.

I can't recall the Pender Queen/Motor Princess having a snack bar. It sounds to me like the Mayne Queen.

The Mayne Queen was built in 1965, so it wasn't the Mayne Queen. We did the trip sometime after BC Ferries bought the Gulf Ferries in 1961 and well before 1965. (Possibly summer of 1962 or 3)

Could have been the Cy Peck, or George S. Pearson then.

Yeah, probably Cy Peck. I don't think Mr. Pearson was big enough to have a snack bar...
