OK, so i've seen these on all the "C" Class and "V" Class Ships. Just what is a "Sound Powered Phone". They look pretty old. How are they different from just a regular phone/intercom?

Sound powerd phones are a safety item as they do not require the ships a/c power to be online.. Lloyds and CSA Requrire these on some ships for wheel house to steering flat and engine room communication. most will have a small crank to create a buzz on the station being called.

The small crank "creating a buzz" is the power generator for these units, if the sound gets weak you just crank it up again. The receiving extension (picked by a dial) rings when the phone is cranked. They are still required as per SOLAS.
