Thanks to a tip from Shane, I learned that the ferry berth at Kuper Island used to be passenger-only, and that there's a pic of it from the air in this book that I recently bought.

Thanks for posting that newspaper clipping. I read it and was impacted by it.
What gets me, is that the residential-school-abuse at that school and others like it (ie. Port Alberni) were happening at the same time as I went to school, in the mid-70's......and within a few hour's drive from where I was raised.
What a different world from mine.... I guess it's when bad things like residential-school-abuse happen in our "own" west coast, that we realise that it's our problem too, and that it's legacy will affect us too. I say this because the survivors of this school-abuse are living in our west-coast communities today, and some fo them are the people that we pass on the street.
ps: Graham: what's the date on that newspaper clipping? is it recent / current / ancient ?
