How about the Queen Charlotte Islands? The Kwuna serves more than just the airport, but I think that might be a big reason why it's there.

Less than one quarter of the Kwuna's traffic would be airport related, I think.

Karl, For a little more history on the ferries that serve the Ketchikan Airport, here's a link to the ferry service that originally built the "Bob Ellis", then the "Mt Marcy". www.ferries.com/gfx/fleet.pdfKetchikan airport actually has acquired three ferries originally built for the Lake Champlain ferry service, but the Bob Ellis is the only one still in service. The other two were the "Algonquin" renamed the "Ken Eichner" and the "Abnaki" renamed the "Dick Borch". All three little ferries (two 80' and one 100') made their way to Alaska from upstate New York via the Panama Canal under their own power. www.ferries.com/As a note of personal interest to me given where I live, over the years, the RiverLink ferry service has purchased two ferries from the Lake Champlain service for use as passenger ferries on the Delaware between Camden and Philly.

if your going to say that the kwuna services an airport, then you have to say that albion, and TSW - SWB and HSB DPB all serve airports too.

if your going to say that the kwuna services an airport, then you have to say that albion, and TSW - SWB and HSB DPB all serve airports too. Not quite. If you go to the Queen Charlottes you basically have 3 options. Seaplane, ferries, or regular airplane. The main airport serving the Queen Charlottes is in Sandspit - that's where Air Canada flys to. And in order to get to any sizeable population center on the Queen Charlottes you have to take the Kwuna from Sandspit to Skidegate. I know there is a very small community in Sandspit (pop. 538) but that's about the only one. On all of Graham Island there are less than 30km of public road. Compare those numbers to this from britishcolumbia.com The Sandspit Airport is located on the largest area of flat land on Moresby Island, which protrudes out between Hecate Strait and Shingle Bay. The Sandspit Airport is the major transportation gateway to the Queen Charlotte Islands offering charter and regularly scheduled passenger services, air ambulance, and other services. Every year over 40,000 passengers travel through Sandspit Airport, and close to 14,000 aircraft take off or land annually. There are two scheduled daily flights from Vancouver to Sandspit, one from Prince Rupert. www.britishcolumbia.com/regions/towns/?townID=3731Like I said, the airport isn't the only reason the Kwuna route is there, but it is a big reason why it's there. It wouldn't be there for 500+ people. It wouldn't be there for a few logging trucks. It wouldn't be there just for tourists. It's there because it links the most important "gateway" (the airport) to the Queen Charlottes to the main population, communities, and commercial areas of the islands.

There is a second airport at Massett which receives regular service from Pacific Coastal Airlines. As for the Kwuna, yes it does allow people on Graham Island to access the Sandspit airport, but I would bet something in the order of 10% of her traffic is airport related.
What percentage of traffic on the Skeena Queen do you think might be due to Salt Spring residents accessing Victoria airport?

Well look at it this way - the Kwuna makes 12 round trips a day from Skidegate to Alliford Bay. Suppose 1 of those round trips is completely full of airport traffic. That's 8.3% ...
There is only one Air Canada flight per day to Sandspit from Vancouver (and none from Prince Rupert to Sandspit in spite of the earlier post quoting another website). In the summer there would be some charters but most of those actually go to Masset and not Sandspit).

Yes there is a little airport in Masset but from what I can gather it's very small compared to Sandspit (which is also quite small:).
It appears I am losing this argument:) However, it will be interesting to hear what our professor friend from Royal Roads discovers during his current visit to the Queen Charlotte's.
