Swartz Bay has undergone some recent improvements. A few months ago, traffic patterns for dropping and picking up walk-ons' had been completed. Now, recent work has focused on blasting away a portion of a hill in order to move the ticket booths up further towards the highway. The end result, the capability of holding more cars inside the ferry compound. Below are some recent pictures showing what has been blasted away, and the future location of the ticket booths.

If memory serves me, I recall a further rumor (maybe it was even mentioned in official BC Ferry documentation) that the long term plan for Swartz bay was to make further changes to the walk-on passenger area. I believe the idea was to create a system similar to that of major airport terminals where departures occur on the top floor, and arrivals on the lower. In short, there is the possibility of further improvements.
