As far as I know a replacement for the 'Wack is still up in the air as BCFS has not decided whether or not to newbuild or to buy a used ship. Welcome Aboard, bpawlett...

As far as I know, The Northern Discovery is the expected NewBuild to Replace the Queen of Chilliwack. It will hold 60 Cars, Less then her Predecessor. The Chilliwack is expected to be retired around 2010-11. No Word Yet on when or where she will be built.

In a recent "official" document (either the annual report, or the 3rd quarter report, or the new service agreement, or something like that), I saw that it said that the new "Northern Discovery's" purchase approval (or disapproval) would likely happen in the next service term. This means that it's purchase is not going to be decided in the next couple of years.
And by "purchase", I mean either a new build construction or a used purchase.
I personally believe that a replacement won't happen.....for a long, long time. There are too many other needs to be met first. I think that the route might die out, once the Chilliwack dies out. (Route 40, that is).

I seem to remember reading 2011 in recent documentation as the set retirement for the Queen of Chilliwack

I am sure that Chilliwack's hard bump at Bear Cove today (28 Aug 2007) will be reported here in detail. Two injuries? That is pretty serious. I like the ol' Norwegian barge, despite her odd deck configuration. Maybe I mostly remember the Route 40 crew, rather than the boat. Nicest people to spend 11 hours at sea with. Mmm, who else cooks Snapper Vindaloo on BC Ferries? ... or can spin 180° against a racing ebb tide, set the Z-drives to hold steady while we watch humpback whales in King Channel, and still put us into Bella Coola right on time?
