I'm going to be at Duke Point on the Labour day weekend, and I was wondering. Can you take good photos from the foot passenger lounge, or should I go out to the parking lot?

The best spot is from the long-term parking lot. From the lounge, take an immediate right and follow the path to the lot. There might be some vines in the way but hopefully not too many.

If you're wanting pics of the ship you just walked off, or watching the Alberni arrive, go to the long term parking lot, which runs parallel to the ferry berth. If you're watching the New West arrive, and you're about to board that Ferry, you're best bet would be to go to the terminal holding lanes for the best angle of her doing the 180 degree power slide into the berth.

Can you get to the park (Jack Point Park) from the ferry terminal without walking a mile towards Nanaimo first?

Not unless you jump a chain linked fence with chicken wire on top, and black berry bushes all along the base of the fence. Though I do know of someone walking along the beach to the terminal and coming up the bushes into the long term parking lot at 5am....
