Hi folks:
After looking at Kevin Stapelton's pics of the new MAK engines being installed in the Coastal class ships, it got me wondering...
When BC Ferries upgraded several B-class ships to the V-class, I understand they tore out the old engines and installed new MAK models.
My question is... how did they get the old engines out and the new ones in? Would they have cut into the lower car deck?

My question is... how did they get the old engines out and the new ones in? Would they have cut into the lower car deck? Yes, they did cut into the deck plating... Once the first set of engines were replaced, they added a removable plate that spans the whole length of the engine to facilitate easier maintenance and replacement if necessary... I'll see if I can get a picture for you when I am on the Esquimalt on Sunday...
