Inquiring minds thing they have heard it a couple of different ways, and want to be sure.....

A Kwuna crew member told me that the name is pronounced Kuna (Koo-nah). The 'w' is silent. Also, Esquimalt, is pronounced Es-kwhy-malt (or Es-qui-malt). The 'i' is 'hard', as in 'pie'. Esquimalt, a Victoria area municipality (suburb), is home to Canada's Pacific naval fleet. The name has a 'First Nations' origin.

That is absolutely correct. That's how you tell if somebody's from Washington or not.... ;D

It is pronounced like ES-KWAI-MALT. I have given up trying to pronounce some of the Washington State Ferries . Which WSF names are stumpers for you? I refuse to be held responsible for Puyallup (pyoo-AL-up). And yes, 'Sequim' was the name for the aborted fourth Jumbo Mark II... I wouldn't have wanted to work on a boat nicknamed the 'Sink or Sequim'... Anacortes is pronounced ann-uh-COR-tis. At least, that's what all the locals say, and I'm about halfway to 'local' status... ;D

I've heard that anacortes was pronounced
ANN-UH-KORTS 3 syllables, not 4

As someone who lives there, I an assure you it's a four-syllable name.
