www.bcferries.com/schedules/notices/notice03100604.htmlService notice from BC Ferries about the redeploments of the Alberni to route 2 and the Esquimalt to route 30. What is funny about this if you read the service notice about the Alberni going to route 2 to replace the Oak Bay. "Because of higher traffic volumes on the Departure Bay – Horseshoe Bay route the greater capacity and speed of the Queen of Alberni is required" That is what they said on the service notice. I thought it was funny and well not true really. The Alberni is the same speed and has less capacity, not more than the Oak Bay, lol! They dont want to tell the truth!

Somebody mentioned this earlier, but I couldn't find it in the archives; they mentioned that although the Oaky was going out, that the Cowichan would take the Oaky's place and the Alberni would take the Cowichan's place.

I believe it was "engineer" who told us on this board last year that the Alberni is considered to be the "fastest" ship in the fleet.
Not re maximum posted speed, but on actual average speed. Something to do with her small, light superstructure.

The Alberni has the same engines as the other C-Class boats, but has less superstruture so she would be faster. I think they mean the Alberni vs. the Esquimalt on the capacity issue, but doesn't the Esquimalt hold more cars than the Alberni? Maybe not without her platforms.

The Esquimalt only carries 286 without her platforms.

What hergfest just said about the Alberni is correct. They take the Alberni off of Route 30, so the Esquimalt doesnèt cause a ton of delays on Route 2. Ièll be on the Alberni on Route 2 next month, so Ièll be looking forward to that. ........I donèt know if itès just this computer, but my apostrophes are messed up, and appear as è , could be the fact that Ièm on a stupid Mac.

I'll be on the Alberni on Route 2 next month, so I'll be looking forward to that. Personally, I would only want to be aboard the Alberni when she's not on route 30. Although I would sacrifice elbow-room to be be on other ships on runs that they're rarely on; I guess it's all subjective.

Try the Alberni on route 1 now a days! lol!! I ended up on the Esquimalt yesterday as I had to go Vancouver for the day and I dident get the 11am cause there was a one sailing wait. My mom was on the 11am and she said it was just packed. Nowhere to sit. The Esquimalt isent as bad as it's more roomy than the Saanich. I came back on the Saanich last night from Tsawwassen and it was only about 50% full but still it seemed busy. I have been on the Alberni on route 2 and it was packed. The Esquimalt sure needs some deck work on her as her decks are pretty sad looking. I think she could use a good refit. I dident realize this till yesterday but the Esquimalt sits in berth 3 now at Swartz Bay cause berth 2 is being redone. So foot passengers have to board via the car deck. I always thought all the double ramped berths at SB had a walkway.

"Because of higher traffic volumes on the Departure Bay – Horseshoe Bay route the greater capacity and speed of the Queen of Alberni is required" route 2 has a higher volume than route 30 so they need a vessel that can do the route in the same time as the esquimalt.

Try the Alberni on route 1 now a days! lol!! I ended up on the Esquimalt yesterday as I had to go Vancouver for the day and I dident get the 11am cause there was a one sailing wait. Just be glad that they've decided to add sailings; according to the printed all-routes schedule, they're are supposed to be far fewer added sailings than have been scheduled (I know, it's spring break). I guess that's a Public-Relations/Corporately motivated manoeuver: Report a bare-bones schedule originally in order to look good when adding so many sailings later; unfortunately, this kind of tatic is far too common. My mom was on the 11am and she said it was just packed. Nowhere to sit. The Esquimalt isent as bad as it's more roomy than the Saanich. (these quotes were separated to make a point) I came back on the Saanich last night from Tsawwassen and it was only about 50% full but still it seemed busy. And they chose to replace the SOVI with the Saanich? Oh Yeah! The Saanich has a larger gift-shop. I dident realize this till yesterday but the Esquimalt sits in berth 3 now at Swartz Bay cause berth 2 is being redone. So foot passengers have to board via the car deck. I always thought all the double ramped berths at SB had a walkway. I thought the same. Does anyone know when berth 3 at SB was double-ramped? So there's only one berth, for now, at SB with an overhead walkway. When I took the Esq on the first added-sailing of the day a while back, I was surprised when the ticket-booth attendant told me that she'd be boarding at berth 1 even though she was tied-up at berth 3; The Queen of Esquimalt then proceeded to back-out of berth 3 (yes, they had her bow-to back then) and pull-up to berth 1.

I think it was in the 1990's cause it looks like a new structure, it was there in 1997 but not in 1986, somewhere in between there.

I think it was built when berth 1 was rebuilt but why do they need it to be 2 decks???

I think it was built when berth 1 was rebuilt but why do they need it to be 2 decks??? I'm assuming they built it because of projected growth, but how often have any of us seen the second ramp of berth 3 used? Not much time savings when you have to load foot-passengers via the car deck .

The Saanich has a larger gift shop that takes up too much space. Has anyone ever noticed how the upper lounge upstairs in not as nice as the rest of the ship??? I noticed that last night!

I suppose they added the extra ramp to berth 3, when they modified the terminal for the Spirits in 1993/4. I remember walking into the Swartz Bay ticket area in 94, and they were doing lots of work to the building, and it seemed like it was not even that close to being finnished, and they were using the building anyway. Speaking of Terminal changes.....perhaps Scott, or a regular of Route 2, or 30 before 1997 could help me out with this one. Does anyone remember when the long hallway would come out right by the foot passenger ticket area, instead of the designated Arrival area they have today? I always seem to remember watching my Grandparents come around a corner towards the ticket booth to the right (you can walk through this area now to the Arrivals area) and then they would come out of the doors. I might be just dreaming this, but it's been something that made me think they changed when the Fastcats came around possibly.
