MV Mill Bay Celebrates 50 Years
On Tuesday, June 27, 2006 BC Ferries will be celebrating the 50th Birthday of the MV Mill Bay and its continuous operation on the Brentwood Bay - Mill Bay route.
The celebration will include onboard decorations, giveaways and events throughout the day and a hotdog barbeque and a birthday cake at the park beside the Brentwood Bay dock from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Members of the community are invited to come and join the celebration.
The MV Mill Bay was built at Victoria Machinery Depot, registered in Victoria in June 1956, and put into service on the Mill Bay route in July of the same year.
For 50 years the vessel has made the three nautical mile crossing of the Saanich Inlet. First under the ownership of Coastal Ferries Ltd. and then transferred to BC Ferries on June 15, 1969. The MV Mill Bay makes nine daily round trip sailings, except Sundays when the vessel makes eight trips, and for short periods in the winter when the vessel is in refit.
At 174.89 gross tons, with a service speed of 10 knots and a vehicle capacity of 16 cars, the MV Mill Bay is the smallest ferry in the BC Ferries fleet. In 2005 major work was completed on the vessel including overhauling the main engine, extending the wheelhouse and installing a new rescue boat.
BC Ferries is proud to celebrate the 50th Birthday of the MV Mill Bay and its route known as ‘Vancouver Island’s most beautiful shortcut.’

Yeh but I live closer to the Brentwood Bay Terminal than you do. Only takes me 15 minutes to get there by car, and you have to either go around or across Saanich inlet, which will be at least 35mins.

The 50th Anniversary of the NIP is in 2008. The 50th Anniversary of the Mill Bay is in a few days, quite a big difference.

Harry: will you be at the 50th anniversary event?
If so, and if you have a camera, please consider taking some pictures, and posting them on this forum.
Thanks!
PS: if you're going, enjoy the event!

There were no festivities for the QPR's 40th. I don't think 40 is such an important milestone for a ship as 50 is. However the original crew had a reunion Celebrating the 40th Year of Service for the Inside Passage

Watching A-Channel News coverage of the Mill Bay's 50th year just now, I saw a string of flags from the International Code of Signals being flown on the vessel. Did anyone catch the message the flags were saying?

Oh joy... how productive. Why not say something like "Fifty Years" or "Free Hotdogs?" Not the most northernly terminal/name of the ferry.

No, I don't think it said that. Here's my analysis of those flags, using a couple of screencaps I made.

I wasn't even there, I would have liked to go but Dad was working and Mother doesn't drive, so I couldn't go unless I rode my bike or took the bus, and I wasn't really feeling that well either.
