JAMES, Edward Derek: May 27, 1936 - Oct. 3, 2006
Born in Newcastle Upon Tyne, England. It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Derek E. James. He went peacefully Oct. 3, 2006 at the Royal Jubilee Hospital. He leaves behind his much loved family; wife of 45 years, Wendy, sons Garry and Terry and daughter-in-law Christina. Tara and grandson Daniel. Family in England, sister Patricia & husband Graham, sister-in-Iaws Paula & husband George, Jean & husband Cecil, nieces, nephews & cousins. His brother-in-law Eric & wife Margaret in Canada. Derek served 16 years in the British Merchant Navy as Chief Engineer, then came to Canada with his family in 1974 to work for the BC Ferry Corp. as Chief Engineer, then retired in 2001.
Derek was very involved with the community of Sidney, he was the host of a local TV talk show called "Close Encounters" 1979 to 1986. He was involved with the Peninsula Soccer Association, Peninsula Rugby Club, field hockey, Saanich Cricket Assosiation. Derek was a member of the Saanich Peninsula Lodge #89 and involved with the Army & Navy.
Derek will be remembered for his sense of humour, love of sports and music, he was also a keen bird watcher. He touched the hearts of everyone he ever met! The family would like to thank Dr. Jeff Unger at the Saanich Peninsula Hospital, Dr. Alasdair Polson and our extreme gratitude for the nurses Kirsten & Rachel at the Royal Jubilee Hospital 4th floor for all they did. A memorial will be held on Saturday Oct. 14, 2006 at 2:00pm at First Memorial Funeral Services in Royal Oak 4725 Falaise Drive. Please join us in celebration of Derek's life! Flowers are welcome.
