Public Mischief & Vandalism - Sointula[/url] BC Ferries recognizes and appreciates the efforts of the Sointula community the last two Hallowe’ens to prevent the historical “egging” of the ferry. Unfortunately last year’s event was marred by a few individuals “paintballing” our vessel and crew. Safety is a top priority at BC Ferries. Any activity that has the potential to put our passengers, crew or property at risk is unacceptable. As a reminder, the ferry will not dock at Sointula if there is any indication of potentially hazardous activities related to the use or operation of the ship or the terminal. BC Ferries takes acts of public mischief and vandalism seriously, and will not allow our passengers or crew to be put at risk. Any act of public mischief or vandalism will be reported to the police for investigation, and where appropriate for criminal prosecution. Contact: Captain Gordon Nettleton Marine Superintendent Tel: (250) 890-7800

Complete idiots is right. Do they think they can get away with these things. They are probably all First Nations people too.

They should just stop serving that island for a while. Maybe that'll make them think about the consequences.

That makes no sense. It's not the whole island it's just this group of people.

I am honestly sutunned. Do people actually believe that this is appropriate for the vital connection for their essentials? These people need this connection, and should be taken seriously.
BC Ferries should hire security for home port for the Quadra Queen II. I mean, this cannot go on. They don't do this at other small island terminals.... do they?

It seems that the festival of Halloween allows for some traditions that aren't regularly tolerated.
You get some folks who remember egging a ferry back in 1984 or so, and other folks want to keep that tradition alive, stupid as it might be.
When "tradition" is involved, people think it takes precedence over lawfulness. (same issue with a traditional private wet-grad drinking party for students at Dover Bay school in Nanaimo).
Good on BC Ferries for taking a stand and being tough on a stupid tradition.

Ok, if they have cops there, why not drive down there when the ferry comes in that night (can't be more than once or twice), pop on the cherries for 10 mins while 10 cars unload and 5 cars load? Egg problem solved for the year.

Because it's embarassing to have to tag and bag your own kids?

Karl: Damned questionable, your comment that they're probably all first nations people.
You know, when I read this press release, I couldn't help but be saddened. There was a time when the public attitude towards this kind of mischief was one of "boys will be boys", and that if the captain of the ferry didn't want them to egg his boat he'd have the ship's fire hoses turned on them. Of course, nowadays, the kids are protected from such 'renegade justice', and the cops have to be called.
I'm not condoning unlawful behaviour... just expressing dissatisfaction with our overly PC world.

Good suggestion, Mr Fenklebaum. A firehose. Trick or treat!
If egg splattering was the worst vandalism we had to deal with, we would be rather fortunate. Raccoons everywhere would rejoice, not to mention the Egg Marketing Board.

Eggs? Ok, that's a prank. Annoying of course, but it probably doesn't hurt anyone. Good idea about turning the hoses on them! However, if it escalates to (as it seems it has) paintballing, that's a different story. That could be quite dangerous, and it's also clearly vandalism.
