According to News 1130, the Queen of Capilano has lost power outside of Horseshoe Bay. She is now sitting powerless, with the anchor down. I haven't found very many details yet, but I'm sure we'll find out more shortly. The only notice BCF has so far is:
The Queen of Capilano has experienced a mechanical problem necessitating the suspension of service this evening. Water taxi service is being provided. Engineers are working diligently on the problem. An update will be provided in the morning.

I just caught it on Global news at 11pm. It was their top story and it was 15 seconds in length. They were trying to compare it to the QOB incident even though it hasn't run aground. Just simply lost power. Wouldn't be a nice night to be stuck out there weather wise...

It's easy to compare with the Oaky since the Oaky is huge and the Cap isn't.
Well at least they stopped and didn't crash into anything

The local radio station had me going this morning. They said it was the Queen of Coquitlam that lost power, and then sank. Then the guy immediately realized he was wrong and corrected himself of course......But apparently this 20 minute trip, lasted for 4 hours, because they couldn't get the anchor up.
I wonder if this means the Cappie will finally get that badly needed refit now, seeming they haven't done anything to her since January of 04.
Is the Bowen Queen sitting at Fulford Harbour right now, or is she already being used somewhere?

Is the Bowen Queen sitting at Fulford Harbour right now, or is she already being used somewhere? A week ago Friday, the Bowen Queen finished her time relieving the Cumberland and sailed with a plain-clothed crew to Fulford, and there hasn't been reason for her to have left there since.

Replacement Vessel Assigned to Bowen Island Run Posted November 06, 2006
The MV Bowen Queen is being redeployed to the Horseshoe Bay – Bowen Island route until repairs can be made to the Queen of Capilano.
The Bowen Queen is expected to arrive at Horseshoe Bay by late afternoon today resuming the regular scheduled service. In the meantime, water taxi service is being provided to and from Bowen Island.
The Queen of Capilano, which operates on the Horseshoe Bay – Bowen Island route experienced a mechanical malfunction of the propulsion system as the vessel was leaving the dock at Horseshoe Bay Sunday evening at approximately 8:30 pm. Crews immediately proceeded with loss-of-power procedures and deployed both anchors as they are trained to do. There were no injuries, no damage to the vessel and no impact on the environment.
Prior to setting sail, all pre-departure checks were conducted with normal results. The cause of this incident is currently under investigation.
The Queen of Capilano will only resume service after all repairs are completed and extensive tests are conducted. The vessel is expected to resume service later this week.

too bad the kuper hasn't done sea trials and been completely finished yet, could have possibily seen her there if she was finished, that would be neat.

Looks like the dock work has come to a stop at Horseshoe Bay. Berth 2 appears to be open, and work had began on berth 1. The barge that was in berth one looks like its tied to the dolphin out side of berth 1, and the Queen of Capilano is sitting in Berth 1. www.westvancouver.com/webcams/hbaycam/No sign of the Bowen Queen yet though, unless she's drifting out in the Sound right now. They also have a 3:35 sailing listed, with the Capilano, so maybe they fixed the problem already?

Hopefully someone with more knowledge of the traffic patterns on Swartz Bay - Gulf Islands can help answer my question. Would it make more sense to move the Bowen Queen to replace the Queen of Cumberland and then the Cumberland to replace the Capilano?

hmm. I dont think Engineer would like that idea. If it's only for a few days the Bowen Queen would be fine for the Bowen route.

The Cumbie has the 100+ capacity with the platforms, so I think that would keep her on the Gulf Islands. Plus BCF can't maintain the turnaround time with the Cumbie's car capacity on the Bowen run. The Bowen Queen only holds 15 less cars than the Cap, so it isn't too much of a loss of service. And the Kuper only holds 32 cars, which would mean major backups on the route.

Haha, I was joking about this with Graham last night on MSN. He was planning on taking a trip on the Bowen Queen this Thursday, on her original route. I had told him it would be funny if they got the Cappie up and running again first thing this morning......
5:45 am update
The Queen of Capilano will return to service on the Horseshoe Bay – Bowen Island route on Tuesday, November 7 with the 06:05 am sailing from Horseshoe Bay.
The vessel was removed from service following a mechanical malfunction of the propulsion system on Sunday evening, November 5.
On Monday, November 6, BC Ferries provided water taxi service and vehicle service resumed with the Bowen Queen at 4:35 pm.
Throughout the day on November 6, engineers and technicians conducted comprehensive tests on the electrical propulsion system of the vessel and are confident the issue has been resolved. Transport Canada has cleared the vessel to sail.
BC Ferries regrets the inconvenience this service interruption caused its customers and thanks Bowen Island residents for their patience.

Anyways, good news that the Cappie is running again.

The Queen of Capilano has had Mechanical problems again this after noon and has been tied up at Horseshoe Bay and water taxi service is operating between Horseshoe Bay and Bowen Island!
Also does anyone know were they brought the Bowen Queen? did they bring it to the spare berth at Langdale? She will probably be back on the Horseshoe Bay to Bowen Island route later today if she is there

extreamme, The secondary berth at Langdale sits empty almost year round. In the summer, the Esquimalt will sit in that berth, when not in service. Plus a Ferry will sit there, a day or so before a ship change for refits, or breakdowns. The Bowen Queen almost never sits in that berth, she's based out of Fulford Harbour on Saltspring Island, when she's not in service. I doubt the Bowen Queen will be brought back over, as I'm sure they'll have the Cappie running again very soon. The Bowen was only on the Route last week for a few sailings in the afternoon, the day after she broke down. The next morning, the Cappie was up and running again.
What's going on with the Capilano? In two more months, it will be 3 years since the last time she's had a refit. I wonder if this is a RAD/Engine problem, or more electrical problems.

Ah, ok, here we go. This answers everything.
The Queen of Capilano is back in service on the Horseshoe Bay to Bowen Island route.
The vessel will shuttling back and forth until traffic is cleared.
The vessel was out of service from the 2:35 p.m. sailing today after a log struck one of the Right Angle Drive units.
BC Ferries thanks our Bowen Island customers for their patience during this service interruption.
...........................................................................................................................................
Howe Sound is a huge debris field right now, from all of the logs and trees flowing down the Squamish River. This is just because of all the rain we've had lately, rising the rivers up. It's just mother nature doing some cleaning I suppose.....
