In the fall of 1990, while I was living in Richmond, I went For a weekend tour of CFB Esquimalt with the Sea Cadet Corps I was in. On the Friday afternoon we caught the 3pm sailing to Swartz Bay which was the Queen of Victoria, on the Sunday afternoon we were on the 3pm from Swartz Bay to Tsawwassen which was the Queen of Vancouver. The Queen of Victoria was the Tsawwassen Based ship and the Queen of Vancouver was the Swartz Bay based boat.

If my memory is right the Van & Vic were both Tsw. based, and the Saanich & Esq. were both Swartz based for many years in the pre-Spirit era. But I believe that it is also fair to say that the vessels were moved around fairly often, esp in refit season.

I found a few more photos on this subject that may interest some of you: On the topic of Village People Bay, the dearly departed Queen of Victoria also called-in at Mayne Island during the summer. She is seen here leaving Swartz Bay in August 1995. She was doing extra sailings to help the four Route 1 ships stay on time. The 1730 departure from Swartz Bay on Sundays and Holiday Mondays would stop in at Village Bay during the busy season in '95, '96 and '97. Here she is approaching Village Bay in September 1995. She'd pull out of Village Bay just as the Queen of Vancouver would be going by on her 1800 departure from Swartz Bay. This gave one the chance at getting this unique photo in Active Pass as the Saanich passes the Vancouver. I was at Tsawwassen terminal to witness the return of the Queen of Oak Bay. With the rebuilt Queen of Coquitlam back on Route 2, the Oaky became the spare and she would relieve other ships for refit. She would return to Tsawwassen while relieving the Queen of Alberni on Route 30. Before October 2003, the Oak Bay was on Route 2 for 20+ years. The Queen of Vancouver sits in berth 2 with two different paint schemes! The Queen of Oak Bay leaving Duke Point in October 2003. I don't know if this would qualify as "away from home" because, technically, she didn't have a home yet! The Open House for the brand spankin' new Spirit of B.C. at Canada Place in March 1993.

I was at that open house I think that's when I decided I like ferries, but I can't really remember.

Awesome. I love the ones of the SOBC at Canada Place. I am really looking forward to an open house now on the Northern Adventure there!

Thanks again, Alan for sharing those photos with us.
Seeing the Spirit of BC in the 1993 shot from its Vancouver Open House reminds me that for its first year of operation it was Swartz Bay based. It was moved over to Tsawwassen once the SoVI came on the scene.

Thank you Cathy! Glad you enjoyed the photos. Seeing the Spirit of BC in the 1993 shot from its Vancouver Open House reminds me that for its first year of operation it was Swartz Bay based. It was moved over to Tsawwassen once the SoVI came on the scene. Thanks for refreshing my memory Jim. I picked up this photo from a friend a few years ago and something just wasn't connecting.... Obviously, there's only one Spirit ship and she would have to be Island-based for the drawings to match the schedule.

When the Spirit of BC was first put into service she was based out of Swartz Bay for her first few months of service. She was then Transfered over to Tsawwassen. I have sailed on her several times based out of Swartz Bay.

Which are the other vessels identified in the bus-ad?

That photo would have to be from the summer of 1993 when the SoBC was in service and Swartz Bay based. The SoVI was still under construction. The first 'V' withdrawn from regular service may have been the Victoria, but I am just guessing. The extra 'V' was probably assigned to supplemental service as described by Alan (i.e. Airchime - see above).

Thanks, Alan..! I seem to remember another ad that was on transit buses during this time advertising late night sailings aboard the Alberni on route 30...

The Spirit of BC also had an open house at Ogden Point. I remember going on that one. Hubby worked on lots of places in that boat and I got to see what he had done in the engine room. I also got to walk all over some of his work. He also showed me what his brother was working on in the bridge. It was really quite impressive.
In the early 70's a BC Ferry would stop and pick up people from a Gulf Island(Pender) on the way coming from Vancouver. It was not part of the regular route, but they did stop once in awhile. It made my sailing longer and the people who were waiting for me on the other side had a longer wait.

I never liked that first paint scheme of the Spirits. Much prefer the current one actually.

I liked the old one... it looked kinda cool Until they put it on the Wack. Then it just looked ugly.

I liked the old one... it looked kinda cool Until they put it on the Wack. Then it just looked ugly. It looked good at times but otherwise they really messed it up. also putting the Giant BC Spirit logo on the Earls Cove end of the vessel wasn't that good...actually that wall it was painted on wasn't a good idea Either, it was at the end the forward lounge was on, not a good view, like the cafeteria end.

Mind if I make a few additions? Not quite as extravagant as Alan's, but they're pictures nonetheless. This Kahloke is about to head out on an excursion to Buckley Bay from Denman West The Klitsa awaits departure at Maple Ridge... This was taken away back when, last April to be precise, on the Albion Ferry. Several other members on this board have this very shot. "Motor vessel Queen of Alberni is now boarding for Departure Bay in Nanaimo at Berth Number One..." (sorry about the lacking image quality and angle, wasn't exactly "skilled" when I took this last May.) And there ya have it. Enjoy

I didn't like that colour scheme on the Chilliwack, either. But it was good on the Spirits.

Hi Kieran,
All the photos I posted in this thread are my own. There is no site where you can view them as of yet!
