I am going to start a thread for forum members to discuss their observations or memories of vessels working routes that you would not expect to see them on. An example - the Saanich working a route other than 1. So here is my new thread to discuss vessels that are (or were) away from home. I know that most if not all of the C's have at one time or another worked on route 1. I also know that 2 of the V's have worked routes 2 and/or 30 ( Esquimalt & Vancouver). The Esquimalt (built for route 1), also, routinely works route 3. I also believe that the dearly departed Victoria served on route 2 for a limited time prior to its departure to the Carribean. But what about the Saanich? Has it ever strayed from home (route 1). What about the Cowichan - has it ever worked route 1? I am fairly certain that it has served routes 3 and 30 as well as its home route 2. What about the B's? They were built to serve route 2. I believe that at one time or another most of them have served all the main routes. One, the Burnaby, even strayed over the US border. Another vessel that has gotten around is the Chiliwack. I have read on this forum that it has even served in the southern Gulf Islands. Would be nice to see a photo of it docked at Village People Bay! Then there was the QPR's Seattle summer..., and I have not even mentioned the minor Vessels

The Queen of Saanich was briefly on route 30 for like a day or two a few years ago! Not sure why that was though!

The Queen of Saanich was briefly on route 30 for like a day or two a few years ago! Not sure why that was though! It happened because the Esquimalt or the Vancouver broke down while filling in for the New Westminster, which was in refit. I know some truckers from then on wished the Saanich would be the regular substitute vessel on route 30. I think this happened in November 2005 from Monday to Thursday.

Before the Queen of New Westminster was double decked (lifted), it did serve on route 1 from time to time. Before the S-class vessels came into service, the Queen of Burnaby was also on route 1 temporarily. The New West did do route 2 five years ago, when the Cowichan or Oak Bay went for its mid-life refit.
When the Queen of Surrey was in dry dock after its fire fiasco, the Queen of Vancouver was put on routes two and three for various weekend service up until the summer schedule began. That created a domino effect because with the Vancouver on routes 2 and 3, the Queen of Burnaby had to come down and sail on route one for the Victoria Day weekend. That was a CRAZY weekend to remember. A week before the Surrey went back onto route 3, it did supplementry service on route 2.
It was two years ago when the Queen of Alberni was plying the waters of route 3. That vessel was there because the Surrey was out for its annual refit and the Coquitlam was in its mid-life refit. The Alberni had also supplemented route 2 for a round trip at the end of spring break last year or the year before.

Some of my photos on this particular subject......... The Burnaby at Swartz Bay on Route 1, October 1991 The Burnaby at Tsawwassen on Route 1, May 2004 The New West at Horseshoe Bay on Route 2, March 2003 The New West at Swartz Bay on Route 1, April 2004 The Alberni at Horseshoe Bay on Route 3, February 2005 The Alberni just off of Horseshoe Bay on Route 2, May 2006 Sadly, I don't have a photo of the Chilliwack in Gulf Islands service. I just have this photo of her at Point Hope in October 1991. Probably in for her first BC Ferries annual refit. She is wearing the original BCF colours, before the start of the Discovery Coast service. I do have a photo of the Saanich at Village People Bay though!! She was helping the Tsawwassen on the busy Good Friday evening sailing in April 2004.

What took the New West to Rte 2? Thanks for the shots. The Queen of Surreys first fire she had, just 2 months before the one that left her crippled out in Howe Sound. The New West took over for the Oak Bay, which took over the Surreys position. The Coquitlam was in MLU, and either the Vancouver or Esquimalt took over for the New West.

What took the Queen of Burnaby to Tsawwassen? Seeming the Oak Bay, New West, and Vancouver were already being used as a fill in, plus the Esquimalt was out of service due to mechanical issues, which was happening just days after the Queen of Surrey fire....the Tsawwassen was then sent up to Powell River, and the Burnaby was brought down to releive. pressures on route 1. Why they didn't just switch the Tsawwassen with the Nanaimo, is beyond me.

Some excellent shots, Alan.
In response to why the Burnaby was at Tsawwassen. This was shortly after the Queen of Surrey Engine Room Fire in 2003 and there was a shortage of vessels, so the Queen of Burnaby was called in to relieve the Tsawwassen Swartz Bay Route.

Awesome shots, Alan..! Thanks..!
- - - - The Burnaby was to go to Deas for refit at the time she was replaced by the Tsawwassen in 2003, but due to the Surrey incident - she was used for supplementary service on Route 30 and 1 for a few days before beginning her refit...

Spectacular and rare shots; thanks, Alan. I was just starting photographing ferries with my little point and shoot digi cam when the Alberni was on route 2, as in that photo of yours, and was able to actually get shots of both her and the Bowen Queen, filling in for the Queen of Capilano, at Horseshoe Bay, and with a dusting of snow as a background at that. The problem is that I think they're on my old laptop, which I'll have to dig out; atleast now, though, I have more reason to do so - thanks again.

i was onboard that sailing of the queen of saanich at village bay. it was crazy nuts that day. i got to tsawwassen just after 3pm. missed the 4 and 5 and just barely got on the 6. was stopped at the front of the line and had to wait for them to squeeze cars on before i was able to board. the nanaimo was delayed coming out of deas that day and the tsawwassen did the early evening runs to the outer islands with some assistance from the saanich, as they had been taking reservations for that night as if the nanaimo was supposed to be there. the nanaimo did the last sailing of the night to long harbour. passengers did not board her until 1am as the crew was still stocking toilet paper and that kind of stuff. my brother and his family were onboard that sailing. they were not happy campers when they got to saltspring

I thought it was never going to end. With vessels going everywhere, I thought Murphy's law would strike again, another ship would break down. As hwy19man said about the Saanich on route 30, truckers, RVs, and other overheight vehicles loved having the Alberni on route 3. There were obviously less waits for those vehicles. Obviously, it would only work between mid October and mid April, excluding Christmas holidays and Spring break.

The Queen of Vancouver is currently being used as the #2 boat out of SWB. I guess that means that it is 'away from home'. Has this happened anytime recently that the Vancouver has been Swartz Bay based? I believe the Vancouver has spent almost all of its life bedded down for the night at Tsawwassen.

The Vancouver has been based at Swartz Bay before. I remember years ago she was too! There was one year when the Saanich was replacing the SOBC based out of TSA which was like 97 or so I remember being on the 11am sailing from TSA on the Queen of Saanich.
