Actually the wide turn that you can see the NA doing in my photographs is apparently how she'll always have to dock at Bear Cove, as she has to swing her stern into the berth unlike the QPR. According to a brief phone convo that my cab driver had as we approached, the NA hadn't yet docked, and had only been doing circles up until that point.

Obviously they're gonna wanna get a steel dolphin for that. Otherwise, the NA is gonna be known as the next Captain CRUNCH.

Usually the term "Captain Crunch" refers to a specific individual rather than a boat. Besides, there's a problem with those steel dolphins--when you hit them, they tend to hit back. That can lead to damage on the boat.

yes. the Kuper is going to have that problem with the new steel dolphins. the wood ones have a few advantages
1. They are cheaper 2. The tend to bend, therefore are more durable 3. id rather replace a 50,000$ dolphin a hundred times, then have some permanent damage done to a vessel, that would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to repair, and potentially lose several thousands of dollars in lost revenue. 4. they are much easier to find spare parts for. a carpenter is alot easier to find @ 3am than a welder, and if you needed to, deckhands with the knowledge could fabricate replacement parts.

Yes, I can remember your post in the NW Ferries area, and can think of how the new way of building dolphins can actually be more dangerous to the ferries themselves than any creosote pilings or floating dolphins ever would be for the environment. It's too bad they couldn't have designed the new generation of dolphins with this in mind, while keeping to the environmental protection that seems to motivate much of the design concepts for such infrastructure these days instead of the actual logistics involved. Although a layman's assesment, I'd have to guess that a fixed steel-only dolphin would have done much more damage to the Northern Adventure than the floating partly-wood dolphin did. As you can see here, the wood cushioned the NA from the steel even more so because the design of the dolphin also incorporated a buffer corner with no steel below:

Wow she really did some damage on that dock. I'm surprised it's still has wooden dolphins. Might make BCF respond to fixing the Port Hardy dolphins.

In the video it looked like the BC Ferries attendant was taking pictures too from the ramp. Indeed, many photos were taken by ferries personnel to document this incident, including during the crunch itself. My hat's off to their diligence onshore in addition to aboard.

I was at Tsawwassen around 6:30pm, offloading from the SoBC. Me too Didn't see you on board, I never left the buffet though. I was exhausted from a course I was on.

Me too Didn't see you on board, I never left the buffet though. I was exhausted from a course I was on. hahah.... I was in the buffet for about 90% of the voyage. I can't believe I never saw you. Where were you sitting? I was sitting right beside the salad tables, on the port side of the ship.
