To be perfectly honest, I wouldn't sail on a ship named Clallam, Queen of the North, Titanic, Morro Castle, Prinsendam... and I can't believe the Golden Gate Transit Authority had the audacity to name a new boat the Peralta. I might add that the new Peralta was every bit a hoodoo as her namesake.

I dunno.... I don't really mind the Name Northern Discovery. It sort of fits in with the whole Discovery Coast passage thing. The other two are......."meh" names

The other two are......."meh" names I agree Northern Discovery is the only good name. If they thought about it they could have named them after the trio of Failure launched by the Klutz A.K.A. Glenn Clark. being Northern Explorer instead of Expedition and Northern Voyager instead of Adventure. Hey, would have been better then the other two. But in the words of David L. Hahn "But Names Are Names" Compare the Following Names Pacificat Explorer, Pacificat Discovery, and Pacificat Voyager Coastal Rennaisance, Coastal Inspiration, and Coastal Celebration. Northern Adventure, Northern Expedition, and Northern Discovery Am I not the only one that see's a pattern! It's a Sign that the Major Vessel Names are Changing! The Last 6 Major Vessels built or announced have all not had "Queen of" or "Spirit of" in the name. Besides all names at first aren't liked as much as they are today. Give it two months and you'll grow on them.

Northern Adventure, Northern Expedition, and Northern Discovery Well I'm glad I'm not the only one around here who has gotten the names mixed up. I mxed up the Northern Adventures name, and now PR Kid has mixed up the Northern Explorers name. Oh well, I guess it's normal, because I've seen people call the Queen of Coquitlam, the Queen of Victoria, or they'll call a Queen, a Spirit.

There is no "Northern Explorer".....although I made that mistake the first day, when mentioning it to someone at work ("Hey, they used the same name as a Pacificat....and I said 'Explorer', instead of 'Discovery'...") Northern Smokwa?

"B-C Ferries says naming the new vessel after Hartley Bay did not fit with their marketing strategy." this is from CKNW's website. Marketing strategy? *cough* What market is their up north? There is no need for a marketing strategy when it comes to names!

hmm.... i just noticed that the coastal names actually mean something! Coastal Rennaissance (rennaissance=rebirth=rebirth of BC ferries) Coastal Inspiration (inspiration for the next ships to come) Coastal Celebration (celebrating the last of the trio)

Three questions for P-I:
1. Why do people on this forum "cough" so much? 2. You're not aware that the northern runs are heavily tourist oriented, and need to be marketed? 3. That stuff under your avatar... what on earth is that all about?
Just curious. Thanks.

Some nick-name ideas: NA, NE, ND Nad (you could shout encouragment to it by saying "Go, Nad") Nex The "SUV" (as in "Expedition"....also would work for "Explorer") The Lost Expedition ELO Discovery Dave and Gord's Excellent Adventure

1. Coughing is the inside joke if you know what I mean. 2. I know that very well but why would you market it with a name of a vessel? Well I see some logic but it just sounds branded like naming a stadium after a corporation. 3. It has to relate to the avatar if you care to watch Stephen Colbert and the Colbert Report. Drop by Wikipedia or Comedy Central for more info.

I can understand, and for the most part, agree with their decision not to name the Sonia after the rescue effort for the 'North, but what irked me was David Hahn's attitude in explaining it on TV. It was as if to say, "This is purely a marketing decision that we have every right to make, and you're wasting my time to even ask me about it." I don't think he showed any sensitivity to people who sincerely felt the opposite way.
Sometimes his candour and forthright manner is refreshing. Sometimes he just sounds like a bloodless corporate drone who understands nothing but the bottom line.

I think I agree with you Hornbyguy. I think it may make tourists think twice about the trip if they are reminded about the sinking.
Last trip I took on the North it was full of European tourists and it was during the shoulder season. It was a blast seeing their excitement at seeing the whales, the spirit bear fishing for spawning salmon and all the other wildlife. They were so much fun. They were quite disappointed when they found out I had bought the meal package because they wanted to buy my meals. So instead they took turns buying me way too much wine from the bar haha. I felt like their Canadian mascot or something. I still email one of the guys from the trip and have told him about this site.
