On the missing log book...
My guess is that it will be reading material for some BCFS's personnel who are currently doing a very long run bringing the Sonia from Greece to Victoria.

It would be easier and more entertaining to just buy a book or two, or perhaps raid the loat-and-found on the boat. Log books are usually some pretty dry reading, unless there's a lot between the lines...

Easy, Cascade. Let's not go awarding the Pulitzer Prize for investigative journalism to CanWest just yet. It doesn't take 'balls' to run stories like this, it just takes a desire to sell papers, and bad news and scandal sells a hell of a lot better than perspective and rational anaysis. I have some familiarity with what motivates them.
Mixed in with some admittedly disturbing incidents are a lot of fairly routine stories about ramp malfunctions and technical glitches not out of keeping with a company that has almost 200,000 departures a year. If you think that the Province is withholding 90% of what they know, then you don't understand newsapers very well. They've printed their 'juiciest' stuff- at least that which they have any documention for. BC Ferries doesn't feel obliged to respond to the Province's allegations- maybe because they're guilty as charged, but , I don't pretend to know. You're completely wrong about the power of BC Ferries and their attornies to stop this information appearing, since little of it could possibly involve criminality or even serious negligence. George Morfitt doesn't need to sell papers and satisfy shareholders, so I think I'm more interested in his report than the Province's.

Cascade- There has been no shortage of coverage on BC Ferries assorted woes outside of the Province stories. Other dailies, along with local papers, and the electronic media, have fed the public as much of the story as they think there's an appetite for.
If there was to be a series of articles in the Province of ongoing allegations, it would have been advertised as such.
We have no way of knowing what Darin Bowland's true employment situation is, other than what he tells us. Choose to believe what you want, I suppose.
George Morfitt has gained a certain expertise in maritime matters through previous work regarding the ferries, and he is respected in BC for his independent investigating and auditing. BC Ferries has promised to make Morfitt's report public, and we will be able to monitor how closely they adhere to his recommendations.

re George Morfitt: I don't think that integrity, and related independence will be a problem with Mr. Morfitt. I believe that he is a well respected part of the BC Business community. Former Auditor General's know a thing or two about independence and conflict of interest. Besides, he's a fellow member of mine in the BC Institute of Chartered Accountants.....so that must be ok (yeah, that's a weak comparison ). =================== Here's a bio of him: www.mdcbc.com/Board_Bios.htmGEORGE L. MORFITT, FCA Victoria, B.C. George Morfitt is a graduate of the University of British Columbia and a Chartered Accountant. After a 20 year career as a Chief Financial Officer, he served two terms as Auditor General of British Columbia. Mr. Morfitt has held senior executive positions in a number of organizations, including: President, B.C. Institute of Chartered Accountants; Chair, Universities Council of B.C. and Chair, UBC Board of Governors. He is a former municipal alderman and is a past President of both the Canadian and B.C. Squash Racquets Associations. George is a Fellow of the B.C. Institute of Chartered Accountants and a Queen's Silver and Golden Jubilee Medalist. He is an inducted member of the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame and is a director of PacificSport Victoria. He is an adjunct professor at the University of Victoria and is a Principal with the Capacity Development Network. ============================== Here's a link to the BCFS news release about Mr. Morfitt's project: www.bcferries.com/news/files/06-041morfitt_safetyaudit1.pdf============================ Again, with him being a former Auditor General of BC, you won't need to worry about independence or conflict of interest. He works to very high standards of professionalism. Finally, here's a link to an article that illustrates Mr. Morfitt's relationship with the BC Gov't. www.bcpolitics.ca/left_accountability.htm

good point re the Risk Mgmt report.....we see where that got the ferry company.
Still, I'm hopeful for any kind of official report to be released.

re Institute, yeah Mr. Horn is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of BC. (same institute that late BC MLA's Fred Gingell & Dave Stupich were members of).
