so why such expensive upgrades to passenger facilities for only one vessel? Well for one the dock is old and needs to be replaced/re-built.

Why don't they just make it so the walkway can move up or down. That would solve the problems. But the next thing is that those docks are basically for the Queen of Nanaimo and some of the ships that come out of refit. The ships with more then two decks that hold cars can use the three double ramped berths at Tsawwassen. It really doesn't matter if they use the facilities for one vessel.

Kyle- sorry, that is not true. The Coastal Ferries Act is very clear- BC Ferries does not have to let other operators use their terminals.

I personally think that the overhead walkway can only be used when there is a low tike

Well in that picture that Graham had, it almost looks like it could serve a V.
Well, aways back in March, I was walking through the terminal building, up the magic esclator, bound for Berth 5 to catch the Queen of Saanich. I walked right past the enterance to Berth 2 going to catch the and there was a sign there stating that the walkway was under construction. Later that day, pulled into Berth 2 on the Queen of Nanaimo and the rumoured "Deborah Marchall" claimed in her announcement that we were nearing Tsawwassen and that we were needed to unload via the main vehicle deck.
Re Extreamme's comments: Overhead walkways are designed to work in all tides. I do believe they work that way, too.

The Coastal Ferries Act is very clear- BC Ferries does not have to let other operators use their terminals. actually if you take a look at the vehicle ramp, setup, and width you might notice that it is built wide enough for 2 commercial vehicles to come off at once. the naniamo with the galley ramps makes it a little bit tough for this to happen. possibly a commercial vehicle only ferry. this is info passed on to me by a well informed union member.

The original design for the Tsawwassen terminal in the early 90s was for berth 2 to be double decked. Eventually, I think it will happen within a decade.

Last spring I was told by someone that Berth 2 is only going to be used when the Queen of Nanaimo can not use berth 3 or 4. They said the primary berth will be Berth 4 if they can not use that they will use Berth 3 and if they still can't use that they will use Berth 2! They also said the Bowen Queen will always use Berth 1
