I got an idea. I can help process all the photos and host them at ferriesofbc.com/cruises/QueenofNorth/fall2005/ and blend photos and stories. Also photos and stories would be permanently there (as in you can see it in 20 years).
Just an idea.

dont like photopic anymore. I will try webshots again tommorrow. Must be screwed up as Flugel was having trouble getting Tsawwassen Terminals photos too. BC Ferries should get the Queen of the North notice down as it is still posted on the schedules, lol!

In regards to the small Lighthouse you passed between Hornby and Texada Island, That is called Sisters light house, I could see you guys passing it just before 4pm. The area between Sisters and Lasquitea Island is called Stephens pass which the Alaska State ferries use almost every northbound trip About 5 minutes after passing this light station You would have seen a Coast Guard cutter out of French Creek on your Starboard side. I was looking through my 50 power spotting scope when the Queen of The North passed directly in front of the Coast Gaurd cutter. My spotting scope is so powerful I actually could see two people walking on the top sundeck just below the funnle. I could also clearly see some of the rust marks on the front of the ferry and could read the name of the ship painted on the bow. When the ferry was about half way down Lasquitea I rushed home on my bike (10 min bike ride away) so I could hear the ship make its Ballenas Call on the scanner. When the Queen of Oak Bay departed Departure Bay on her 5pm sailing Victoria traffic advised it that the Queen of the North was off of Five Fingers Island, How close to Nanaimo did you come before turning towards Entrance Island? I remember the first positioning cruise I was on, we left Tsawwassen and went up the shores of Galiano, Valdez and Gabriola ISlands, and made a turn at Entrance Island and headed towards Departure Bay, Instead of going inside the Bay, we turned north between Snake And Newcastle ISlands and went up along the Coast of Vancouver Island. I remember friends who did see the ferry from Parksville telling me that they never seen a ferry or Cruise ship so close to shore hear. This is the same trip that we sailed Lambert channle. (between Denman and Hornby Islands). The Last positioning cruise I was on was the year before the Queen of Prince Rupert had a small fire At Tsawwasseen on the day it sailed north to Port Hardy.

I must confess to an error of science in my earlier report on the Queen of the North positioning cruise.
I had stated that the Queen did a 360-degree turn at Tsawwassen before backing in.
As all keen students of Geometry will point out, this turn was actually only 180-degrees.
Sorry for the error. I must now face the consequences......

It was an awesome trip! I took over 250 photos ;D There were a few that didn't turn out though. I am still going through them picking out which ones to upload to webshots. I will post and let you know when I get them up. It was nice to meet Karl and his family member and Mike and his wife! In real life I am a shy person and I was nervous about meeting people from here but it went really well. Everyone was really friendly I just loved the Queen of the North and I definately want to sail on her again!!

re meeting people from these boards:
The neat thing was that I first saw both Karl & Sandi while all 3 of us were outside exploring the outer decks, in the dark, at 6:45 am or so.
The point is, that we obviously had something in common, and this was proven all day long, as we always found each other while exploring the ship.
Just like the real world, we were talking to each other because we had a common point of interest. If we talked more, we might have found some differences ........
So to conclude: I never went out of my way to find Karl or Sandi on the ferry: we just naturally bumped into each other all day long, because we were all doing what interested us....and that was usually the same thing. That's what an internet hobbey community is all about, in my opinion.

Yeah, I agree with Flugel. Ya dont mind me calling you Flugel? I am just used to that name now. That is so true. A cruise like that would make like a big group meeting opertunity for example maybe we can ask BC Ferries if we can charter the Queen of the North going back to Port Hardy and have a big Ferry reunion with everyone on here. Although they might charge a fair amount for it but I doubt they would even do that. If people who dont have alot of money save up by next September they could have the money then everyone can book and we can do it again the cruise. Get alot of the young people on here to come so that it wouldent look like a floating rest home as Flugel said before, lol. That would be neat.

John (aka queenofalberni), what part of French Creek do you usually go to to see the ships passing? I'm quite familiar with the marina since my wife just grew up a 10 minute walk from there.

While watching the Queen of The North pass I was on the breakwater on the North side of the Marina, instead of turning at the pub heading towards the Wheelhouse Cafe, you go straight out along the French Creak outflow. From there you can see beyond Horndby Island and Northern Texada Island.
Another great spot is on the southern end where French Creek Seafoods Park thier trailers. This is the best spot for watching the Cruise ships.
I live in French Creek Village, just across from the Shell Gas station.

In late August when I was over there I went to French Creek to watch the sunrise (baby woke me up.. so why not? .. first I went to the south part that you mentioned, down to that beach beside the Coast Guard station, then I went to the north part and at low tide I could walk out quite far over the other side of the breakwater and got a couple good views of the entrance to the marina. Good place to get some shots of the Lasqueti ferry. We also like walking along the beach from the marina to one of the places where there's a trail up to the road. Is the new Coast Guard vessel there yet? I didn't see it last time I was there a few weeks ago. My in-laws live on Reid Rd. .. my wife probably went to the same schools as you (if you grew up in that area) but I think she's a bit younger than you... she graduated in 2001.

I graduated in 1992 @ Ballenas. The Cutter "Kestrel" used to be based at French Creek untill about a year or so ago and we had at least 3 of those new Coast Guard cutters based hear since. We had the Cape Farwell, The Cape Cockburn and now we have the Cape Ann. I first noticed the Cape Ann while I was watching you guys pass on OCT 1 and as of October 9 it is still here. I do not know if it is a stand in for the Cape Cockburn or if it is permenant. Insedently I was Baptized at the beach that is between the back of the Harbour Master office and the French creek cotages in 1997 while I was part of a home fellowship Church. You can imagine that that beach is quite special in my heart.

October 1st 2005 was the last time that I was on the Queen of the North.
This thread accounts for the Oct.1/05 positioning cruise, which included as passengers myself, Karl and Sandi (a former active member of this forum).
1 year already......time goes by fast.
