What does everyone want to do take the Bowen back to Tsawwassen or the Nanny? ? I think if we are gonna go to the Bluffs also we will need cars. Someone said it is only about a 50 min walk but it looks pretty far to walk there! From Sturdies Bay to Bellhouse Park isent bad we could walk but if we wanna go to the Bluffs it would be good to have a car. If you just wanna spend the afternoon at Bellhouse Park which is fine with me then we dont need cars, cause if I bring a car over I wont be able to go back via Tsawwassen.

Bowen Queen, fastest, most direct to Tsawwassen. You, my friend, feel free to ditch us for the Queen of Cumberland back to your home town.
I'm pretty sure we're sticking to Bellhouse Park, the Bluffs might be pushing your luck. I'm not bringing me car, but me bike would get me around that island for a good day or so. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm out of school! That's it for finals, time to live life to the fullest, riding ferries and what not!
Regards, -Michael

Well if we are all walking from Sturdies Bay to Bellhouse Park then I wont bring my car. I am not sure what Scott is doing as he might drive down to SB and bring his car over then go back via Tsawwassen to Nanaimo so I could get a ride with him as I would like to go back via Tsawwassen then from there back to Swartz Bay!

Graham and I are very likely walking up that "mountain" (or is that what the bluffs are?). Anyone want to join us...?

I might, it depends. If the weather is good, I may walk. If weather turn bad, I will bike. Hmm, I'll think about this one...

The Bluffs are the mountains yeah! If you look at the map posted earlier in this thread it looks like a long way to walk to the Bluffs but if you guys want to do it I will do it too. I will try and spot the Bluffs today as I am gonna take a trip on the Nanny this afternoon! If I come over with Scott and his car we might drive up to the Bluffs as I think if he is joining us he will bringing his car!

ah that solves that! I just emailed the Galiano chamber or commerance and asked them how far and long it would take to walk to Bellhouse and the Bluffs! Should hear back from them soon.

A view from the Bluffs, Galiano Spirit of British ColumbiaAccording to Garmin GPS Mapsource software the distance by road from Sturdies Bay to the Bluffs is about 4 km. The journey is most definitely worth it. Add another 2 km and you will be at the lower end of Georgeson Bay Road and another perfect place for viewing Spirits, V's, B's, etc. With a bit of luck you may be able to see them passing as in lower photo.

Thanks very much for the advice, wetcoastkidjst. You've swayed my vote; I'll be hiking the 6km myself, and I invite others to join.

6 km? My, no comparison, I'm walking! I thought it would be longer...
But, ya know me, I can, literally make a last minute descision.

Six kliks up a hill...might take two hours one way. But hell, we have lots of time, and can do more trips similar over the summer.

6km huh?? In just over 4 hours on the island. It's 5 km from Sidney to Swartz Bay so another 1 km would be a bit farther. You guys really wanna walk 6 km??? We will all have to meet at around 11:45am at Sturdies Bay then we have until either 4:30 or 5pm to be back at the ferry depending on if you are taking the Nanny back to Tsawwassen or the Bowen. If we only have 4 hours it might be better to if I drove over, could take a few people and get up to the Bluffs and Bellhouse Park quicker.

It is 4 km to the bluffs; 2 km more if you go on to Georgeson Bay Road. The elevation gain is less than 150 metres. If you are from Saskatchewan you might call this mountain climbing, but I call it getting a great vantage point. Shouldn't take more than about one hour each way to make this journey. You may not have enough time to do the Georgeson Bay Road extension however, if you are walking. And then there is timing.... Expect route 1 ferries to be transiting Active Pass at about 15 minutes before the hour [if running on time, or 45 minutes after leaving their respective terminals] - Spirits at 7:45, 9:45, 11:45, etc, and V's in the hours between.

hmm, maybe I will drive over and anyone who wants a ride to the Bluffs can get a ride from me. Where are we going first the Bluffs or Bellhouse Park??
Meeting time should be around 11:45am somewhere by the ferry dock as me and Scott if he comes will arrive at 11:40am on the Mayne Queen.

Waiting room?
And the 10:15 will get in around 11:05 or so.
Coming back, I'll be on the 4:50 Bowen Queen. Anyone taking the Bowen too?
Of course, I could always take the 4:20 Mayne Queen/Queen of Cumberland, then the 6:00 Queen of Vancouver.

I was thinking about taking either the Bowen, or taking the Cumberland back, and jumping on to the Vancouver. The only thing is, the Cumberland arrives at 5:35, and that doesn't leave much time to get buy at ticket and get on. Plus it's hard to predict how heavy the traffic is gonna be.
What are we doing for lunch? Ferry food, or Fend for yourself food?

Traffic heading from VI to the mainland shouldnt be as bad but heading from tsawwassen is going to be alot of fun. I am probably going to catch the Bowen back to Tsawwassen.

I was gonna do the opposite from Galiano if I dident drive over was to go back to Tsawwassen on the Bowen or Nanny then back on the 8pm to Swartz Bay but if I drive over I will probably go back on the 7:45pm sailing to Swartz Bay! The 4:20pm I dont think is the Cumberland from Galiano either is the 7:45pm. The Cumberland switches schedules with the Mayne Queen so I have no idea which is the Cumberland sailing. If I remember correctly I have gone to Galiano for the day on a Friday during the summer before and going over was the Mayne Queen and coming back was the Mayne Queen around 5:45pm which there isent a sailing that time as it's 4:20. So dont plan on getting on the Cumberland as it would probably be the Mayne Queen. Previous summers I remember the Cumberland hardly went to Galiano! If I dont drive over I might take the Bowen if there are people who are going to SB and people going on the Bowen to Tsawwassen I just might do that depending if I drive over or not!

1 week today till the Galiano trip. So far these are the people who are going Me, vehicle(undecided) Chris Jordon Scott and vehicle Graham Doug?? Queen of Burnaby Teen?? Dan?? Anyone else?? For those of you who want to get on the Cumberland, your out of luck. From Galiano anyways. I talked to Engineer and the 4:20pm sailing from Galiano to Swartz Bay arriving at 5:35pm is NOT the Cumbie, it IS the MAYNE QUEEN. Same with the later sailing at 7:45pm to Swartz Bay is the MAYNE QUEEN. Cumberland dosent do many trip to Galiano during the summer. On another note you might want to take a look at these Aeriel Photos of Galiano I took yesterday so you can actually see how far you would be walking from Sturdies Bay, Bellhouse Park to the Bluffs! community.webshots.com/photo/550096100/2034980070073795431LHFErCthe middle right of the photo is Sturdies Bay. Open area on the point there by the bay is Bellhouse Park community.webshots.com/photo/550096100/2457287670073795431rmnsTCBellhouse Park is not visible in the photo but is to the far right. If you know the Bluffs are to the middle left of this photo you get an idea of how far from Sturdies Bay, all the way off the right side of the photo, to the Bluffs it would be to walk.

Walking on from Tsawwassen, too expensive for taking a car to the Gulf Islands plus it is much easier.

I'll very likely be coming. I'll be taking a bus (and apparently the Skytrain, according to Graham) from Fort Langley-Tsawwassen.
