I really think the age of the Scotia Prince makes all other points moot. Wetcoastkid makes a good point about the hull debate: I think a lot of media people have made glib remarks about single hull-double hull-compartments without really having a clue what they're talking about, and yet they've given the public a certain view as to what's important.

If BCFS locates a suitable replacement, it will be announced later this month...

If BCFS locates a suitable replacement, it will be announced later this month... David Hahn came on News1130 and said they hadn't found anything and didn't expect a replacement. I'd assume by your post this means they're still hunting?

A friend of a freind of a northern crew member told me that BC Ferries is looking at this vessel. It is brand new, about the right size, and not particularly pretty. It might be the sort of ship that they have in mind for building rather than buying. It seems unlikely that this ship is available as it just entered service a little more than one month ago. It operates in Spanish waters between Barcelona and Ibiza. Perhaps Cascade, or others on this forum, can dig up more info on it. As a start check out the following Spanish language website. www.balearia.net/portada2.php

All these vessels are too big!! We have to think small and compact, remember, like QPR size. But not too small, remember, there still have to be room for the crew and passengers.

This vessel [the Sonia] I am told is being seriously evaluated by BCFS. My info may be out to lunch, however. In terms of size, this vessel is similar to the QotN - 750 passengers, 111 metres length, 75 passenger cabins, # of cars I do not know.
Even on the bottom, the North looks better than this vessel.

The vessel is how many years old? From what the faktom site said she was launched in 04.

What does "built for warm waters" mean?

Other than my third hand information above has anyone anywhere heard anything to link this vessel with BCFS's?

Hornbyguy - are you sure you don't know what is classified as a warm water vessel and cold water vessel ? (I don't mean as Ice Classed in society rating either) If you're refering to load/displacement differentials between ships operating in Mediterranean and north Pacific waters, I really don't think that would be among the top criteria for BC Ferries choosing a vessel. I think they'll be going more on the conventional concerns of price, size, convertibility and age.

A relatively minor concern, compared to other factors.

We have cruise ships here which spend part of the year in Alaska, part in the Caribbean, part in Antarctica. It's nothing insurmountable.

I can confirm that BCFS have found two suitable replacement vessels for the QoTN... However, there is no mention of what or where they are...
