Greetings:
PRQ had her lower level passenger decks removed for increased overheight vehicle capacity.
What route was she operating on that required this overheight capacity?

Unless I'm totally misunderstanding you, this removal of the lower passenger decks happened in the 1970's.
It was to make the entire ship deck available for overheights, when she was on the Jervis Inlet run.
Prior to that, she was identical to the Bowen & Mayne Queens.
Re the recent refit, she got a very small deck-level passenger room removed (this was really just like an Atco trailer that was on the deck). This was removed a few months ago.

The Jervis Inlet Route is the Saltery Bay Earls-Cove Route. She was replaced by the Queen of Capilano in 1991 (Which Of Course Didn't last long since she had engine problems she replaced the Howe Sound Queen on the Bowen Island Route and was Replaced by the Queen of Tsawwassen and Chilliwack where they all sail today) and then Placed on the route where she is today

PR Teen, I don't believe the Capilano was ever meant for Jervis Inlet. Bowen residents had been told that they were getting the new ferry, as BC Ferries always had the option of putting the Tsawwassen to Saltery Bay. The Capilano may have briefly appeared up there for some reason, but I believe the plan always was for it to serve Bowen.

Wasn't there a story going around that she was moved down to the Bowen Island run to be closer to the shipyard? Yes, I remember hearing fond stories of the Capilano's short stay on Route 7.
Interesting. The plot thickens..........

Exactly. That was the Story she was always breaking down on the Saltery Bay Route I think Shane Told me that she missed the berth at Earls Cove and crashed to the left of the Main Berth about a week or a month into service anyway she was moved to the Bowen Island Route So She could be closer to the Burrard Drydock since she was always breaking down.

Say anyone got any photos from when she was on the Jervis Inlet Route?

I think we're getting into the realm of a ferry version of an 'urban legend'. I really think the Capilano was put on the Bowen run because that's the route she was built for, not because she needed to be closer to the repair shop. The reason she didn't get the Cumberland's platform deck was because the Bowen run was deemed not to need the capacity at the time. Back to the Powell River Queen... to add to what HMCS Nanaimo said, before the PRQ was lengthened, the Pender Queen ran with her in the summer.

Oh Yeah. I forgot about that. I'm Pretty Sure that the Saltery Bay-Earls Cove Route and the Horseshoe Bay-Bowen Island Route need a ship the same size Probably a ship carrying 140 cars and 700-1000 Passengers, the Ship would be a Queen of Capilano Type only bigger passenger areas, and could have platform ramps installed when traffic increases. Would keep both routes occupied for a long while

Bowen does need a larger vessel, but the problem is that Snug Cove is very aptly named- there really isn't any space to handle any more cars than the Capilano can take now. Bowen has become a bedroom community to Vancouver, with around 5000 residents, and there are a lot of commuters. A passenger only ferry to downtown would probably be useful, but again, space to park commuters' cars would be difficult to find. Powell River is growing so fast that their needs are increasing as well.

Say anyone got any photos from when she was on the Jervis Inlet Route? Howz about a postcard? The Powell River Queen made two trips to Burrard Dry Dock for modifications during the 1970's. First was 1973 for the lifting of her superstructure and then in 1979, with her other two sisters (cousins?), to get her car deck stretched and new Z-drive engines installed.

That pic looks like pre-stretching to me.

Post-lifting, pre-stretching!
(Opposite from the pre-lifting, post stretching of a 1970's route 1 ship!! ;D)

I've never seen such a great and rare shot of the Powell River Queen; thank you. I thought that something in your photo seemed to stick out like a sore thumb; other than the dogwood-blue on the lifted PR-Class vessel, of course.

Thank-you, both Alan and Graham, for the excellent photos.
Now, I've ridden the PRQ on numerous occasions, and I don't remember this little trailer on the car deck, that got removed re the last refit. According to March's issue of "Island Tides" all the whiners on Quadra got together and sailed to Victoria to protest against Kevin Falcon (because appartently, he was behind the removal of their Atco trailer on their vehicle deck).

Maybe they should send one of those barges up there like the Skeena Queen so it would be more accesable to disabled people not being able to make it up top to the lounges.

That was her Original Purpose Don't Forget. What They Need to do is Install Elevators on those ships

'wrong sorry'
Engineer: Could you elaborate on that? My brother is a twenty five year Bowen resident, and they had been told the Howe Sound Queen was going to be replaced. Was that information wrong?
(I guess this should be on the Capilano thread)
