that is a good point. They have many other things that they also need to invest in and upgrade.

Cool, this would be good for routes 17, 7, or 9 (poss.). Comments on this?

BC Ferries just needs to standardize some of its fleet. Building the V-Class and B-Class in the 60's was a good move in making them all very simillar. They saved a bunch of money, plus almost all of the mechinical pieces are the same so you save money on training and spare parts. Now, just about all of BC Ferries' minor vessels are different. Just a few are sisters. Washington State Ferries is trying to do this with their new boats,

Theres only one in the budget. Then why do I seem to remember David Hahn making an announcement about a vessel that they found in order to aquire? I guess I could just be getting old.

Just a few are sisters. Washington State Ferries is trying to do this with their new boats, The Vs, when they were built, as I'm sure you do know all had different engines though. BC Ferries has never really had a decent attempt at standardization, but again like you said and know that's what they're moving towards now. I am curious to see what happens with the Alberni in her midlife, she's so far astray from the rest of the Vs mechanically it'll be interesting to note if they even attempt to bring her closer into the other 4 ship's standards. I tried to open the 2005 annual report to show the budget for New Builds but something's up with my PDF. Until I get 'er working again you can simply find it under the "About BC Ferries" area, then look at the Annual Reports (the one of the right, I believe). There is also information in the NewBuild page, which is also PDF so I can't get it open either. Got my PDF working again, www.bcferries.com/files/PDFs/BCFerriesAR2004-complete_Sept_7.pdf Page 10

You'll also notice the HTML pages say "Intermediate Vessel" as opposed to "Intermediate Vessels"

Well, if they build 4 of the new I class vessels, then one will be going on Earls Cove-Saltery Bay, Tsa-Southern Gulf Islands, and the PR-Comox route, because the B's and V's will be gone between 2008 and 2010. Except the New Westminster I must say I am looking forward to these new vessels. Even though old vessel friends will be gone.

I think the Nanny is staying until 2015 or so, it just received a big refit.

Yeah, but to supply more sailings? BCF does need 2 vessels on the Tsa-SGI route.

Yeah so is the Burnaby. In the summer, BC Ferries held a meeting in Comox. They said that route 17 had three choices: 2 vessels, three ways (between Comox-Texada-Powell River) that will have capacities of 80 vehicles and 400 passengers. Choice two: have one 200 vehicle ferry travel between Comox-Texada-PR. Choice three: leave the layout the way it is, just replace the vessels. This will happen in 2015. I'm sorry if this was already posted by a PR resident or anyone else.

The Vs, when they were built, as I'm sure you do know all had different engines though. BC Ferries has never really had a decent attempt at standardization Well they did, but only in appearance; So instead of holding up the the ever-growing weight on the system of mechanical inefficiencies, they're taking care of trying to catch up with that constantly-growing-heavier weight by making justifications to charge you more.... Just because W.A.C. Bennet might have been a precedent-setter in terms of infrastructure growth in this province doesn't mean that all of his projects were meant to last (although, it should be noted, the vast-majority of them are lasting well). I am curious to see what happens with the Alberni in her midlife, she's so far astray from the rest of the Vs mechanically it'll be interesting to note if they even attempt to bring her closer into the other 4 ship's standards. I'm assuming you mean Cs ...because the B's and V's will be gone between 2008 and 2010. Except the New Westminster Well we now know that the Queen of Nanaimo will be used through and beyond 2010; and I got the same impression for the Burnaby (based on what I've heard).

Yeah, but to supply more sailings? BCF does need 2 vessels on the Tsa-SGI route. I can't see the new BCFS putting another ship on rte 9; It seems like not even BCFC wanted to keep "dumping" money into the route, let alone the new, and private (i.e. Having far more coporate motivations), BCFS.

Isn't the Burnaby in line for the same upgrade as the Nanaimo next year? Perhaps I misunderstood, but I know there's some (maybe not $15 mill) for an exntensive refit... one of the goals is to open or remove the upper solarium.

I heard what I can only call a rumour, I think on this 'proboard,' that somewhere on the upper deck of the Burnaby is condemned? I could swear that I remember hearing a rumour with a similar mysterious background about this only being because of crew numbers, like we now are facing head-on with rte 9.
Any word on official-word about the Burn'?

As far as I know the upper deck on the Burnaby is closed off. See for yourself they have signs saying crew only allowed on the upper deck. See Sandi's photos for lots of Burnaby! sandi.photos.de.com/p10950407.html

BC Ferries doesn't trust the metal work of the upper solarium, that's the only part I do know for sure. That is why it is closed. I remember David Hahn explaining the Nanaimo refit, and then he mentioned "goals" for the Burnaby (which included reopening the solarium area) but he never made any clear statement as to whether that would be accomplished through a large refit like the Nanaimo recieved.
It's interesting to note, before the Nanaimo's extensive refit she was to be retired nowish. The Burnaby, however, wasn't to be retired until 2015... so one could speculate the same degree of work is not needed on her to keep her in the active fleet. Also, Rte 9 obviously isn't a strategic priority for BCFS so I question how much investment it will recieve. I suppose the Burnaby may actually directly replace the Queen of Tsawwassen despite the fact it's being advertised the new intermediate is her replacement.
Who knows? These plans seem to change once every 8-9 months. By the time the Super Cs arrive the V Class will have all had "midlife refits" the way traffic demands are going.

Still nothing It depends how long her refit is. And on the Burnaby they opened the upper deck after last year's refit you might remember and according to David Hahn they're going to do work to open those upper decks

The traffic demand is only going up one percent a year. I can assume it would be going up pretty quickly soon, though.

I'm sure that BCFS is probably on the road to opening up atleast the outter-upper decks; her refit last season included work on the steel plating, apparently.
