On the way back from the tour of the Sidney, me and Karl stopped by Deas to see what ships were there. Currently at Deas are:
-Kwuna -Klitsa (I think so; I saw what looked like a "Kl....") -Queen of the Islands / St. John's Fishing Lodge -Queen of Nanaimo
And it sounds like the Esquimalt will be heading for Deas after her extra sailing from Swartz Bay (according to Harry's post).
P.S. I hope I don't jinx it (cross my fingers), but I couldn't see any evidence of fire windows being installed on the forward lounge of the Nanaimo. (My only problem with fire windows (if they're anything like the one's on the Tsawwassen) is that they really distort the view (I shot a ferry passing the Tsawwassen from inside the forward lounge, and it literally looks like the ship is curved like a frown).

On the way out to the Sidney, while we were going over the Second Narrows Bridge, I could see the Queen of the North in drydock. The only time I've ever seen the North before!

ooooooh.. so that's where she is. I was wondering about her whereabouts since she left Deas. Thanx for the info, I'll have to get some shots before she's out of drydock. Is she at the WMG yard besides Lonsdale Quay?

They only did that on the Tsawwassen because they had the Life Rafts in front of those windows. But you never know, they might end up doing that, but you think they would of when it was at the Drydock...

Are those shots of the fire windows being installed on the midship lounge of the Nanaimo on the PBASE website from when she was in drydock? (I'm assuming yes)

Currently at Deas: -QoNanaimo -QotNorth -Klitsa (I think; I can't see the name from the highway, it is a K-Class though) -QotIslands
I'm actually posting because I'm trying to figure out what the non-BC ferry is docked at the middle berth of the three main berths. BTW it isn't (I don't think) the "Star of the Seas" that was previously at Deas. I'm going to the Island tomorow, but will try to get to Deas soon to find out.

The Islands is still there, hey? I guess that's her spot until the fishing season next summer. The Nanaimo will be there for another week or so in time for the SOVI to come. But it's hard to say how long the North is there till, spring maybe. Then the Klitsa will be off to Chemainus next summer. I wonder if they've been doing any major work on that ferry lately.

Does Deas - take on other work - besides that for BCFS - given that the yard is wholly owned by BCFS?

North-west side of the tunnel, a few minutes east of Steveston. I don't have the directions off-hand, but you can see the larger ferries when approaching the tunnel southbound.

Yeah, I'm surprised to see her still there, I thought that moorage fees at Deas would be a lot more than elsewhere. But it's hard to say how long the North is there till, spring maybe. I think she normally stays down until the QPR gets her refit in the spring, and fills in for the QPR. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Does Deas - take on other work - besides that for BCFS - given that the yard is wholly owned by BCFS? As far as I hear, it's a seperate operating company now (with the same parent company, BCFS), and has been doing work on private ships for some time now, including the Queen of the Islands as the St. John's Fishing Lodge atleast two years in a row now (also that ship the "Star of the Seas", that I mentioned, sat there for months recently). -------------------------------------------------------------------- If anyone needs any directions or other info about deas, don't hesitate to ask.

Also, how many ships r usually sitting at deas? cause if i go to north van i was wondering if it would be worth the drive. Normally I might think that the QotI would be gone any day now, but since it's been there so long, and is now moored to the side with no work being done, I'd guess that it'll be there for the season (don't quote me on that, though . The best time to go might be in January, as the Spirit of Vancouver Island will be getting it's semi-mid-life refit. If you need directions, either to get there, or how to get near without security having a bird, just let me know (I also know of some great places to get pictures).

There could be any amount of ships in Deas the Facility holds about 6 or 7 Ferries and Ships at the Max but probably the amount of ships in the Off season can be from 2 to 5

I haven't been passed Deas in over 2 years now. The last time I was going through, the Queen of Surrey was sitting there with the three Fastcats beside it. I can't remember why she was there, oh, it might of been because she was getting repaired from that fire she had a few months prior. It was in the middle of July of 2003 when I went passed to see that. Then I remember a few days later when I was coming back to the mainland, the Surrey sat in berth 2 at Departure Bay, and then ended up doing the triangle route (Departure Bay-Horseshoe Bay-Langdale) as Oak Bay was doing route 3.

Surprised at the number of vessels Deas can handle. Do they have a floating dry dock ? I don't think so - could be wrong.
So what type of work do they carry out at Deas - for BCFS and private works?

They do not have a floating dry dock, they carry out basic maintenence of the ferries for checking everything and testing during refit season.

The major re-fits are done in the shipyard who had/has the contract - so why then move them to Deas for testing? What are they testing and why? Once a vessel goes into a dry dock for it's major overhaul - you (BCFS) only accept back the vessel once she has passed all the tests and is ready for active service.

If they installed new engines and tore out the cabin area that St.John's Fishing lodge put into her.
