Do you think BC Ferries should own the inland ferries?

Certain ferries, most of the routes there are free routes, the M.V Shelter Bay and the M.V Mill Bay can switch routes, then there is a cable ferry for the route to Mill bay-Saanich. Then the Mill bay will be able to handle more traffic there, give the Shelter Bay a Stretch and then she can run like the Osprey does. Don't own Galena, she is a privatly owned vessel already. Own the Osprey, the Shelter bay and the Balfour.

Tell me why we should have a cable cutting off the saanich inlet? That will never ever happen! Boats would get struck or snap it, cable ferries never opporate on the ocean!

if it was a cable 5-10m high in the air?

That just wouldn't work even if the ferry had really long extensions, plus there are ships that go through there.

No, they're almost as unprofitable as the Mill Baysterds route so to hell with it.

I agree wi th Doug. They wouldn't make a profit, and they're fine as part of the Highway system.

TO BLAZES WITH MONEY! IT MAKES ME WRETCH!
Why is it that idealism is no longer desirable? We can't work for something WORTHWHILE? Oh, no, we have to quibble about money. I'm so sick of hearing 'they wouldn't make a profit'.
Does the Vancouver symphony make a profit? Nope. So I guess that should be axed. The Downtown Historic Railway along False Creek in Vancouver, does that turn a profit? You're right, it doesn't. Why don't we just burn those interurbans like the others were back in 58'?
Lord forbid that the government might have to *GASP* ??SUBSIDIZE?? Well, call me Pete Townsend and toss me off a bridge, it's the apocalypse!
Free enterprise is just fine by me. But JEEZ already, enough with the 'ooooh, won't turn a profit therefore we SHOULDN'T run it.

I don't think the issue is making a profit, because I think that would be very unrealistic......the minor routes, ocean or inland are not potentially profitable, I think.
The issue is: how big will the losses be. How big of a loss would an owner be willing to absorb? I think that the large loss potential means that Government will always need to be the provider, because no one else is crazy enough to take on the losses.
Maybe I'm wrong, but that's a morning thought from me.

Thanks FerryFreakShane, could I nick-name you FerryFreakS for short?
See if you can get the Balfour too, she runs in tandem with the Osprey, like the Brentwood did with The Mill Bay in 1957

Cable ferries across the Saanich Inlet - come on guys wake up - or get a life.
Sort out the Malahat - if you want the government to spend money.
Now for BC Ferries buying / owning Inland Ferries - they can't even get themselves sorted out on simple - easy routes and make a return or break even.

Really cascade is right get those liberals to make the malhat safe like the hope meritt (cocihalla) and forget the ske to sky for all those whistler cabin people and money draining olympics (even though the olympics will turn a profit).
