Use it as an extra minor vessel for small routes with little or no commercial traffic.

You are all forgetting a small problem.
Why could no other Ferry - vessel - move in to help out when the Malahat was closed ?
The answer was that the "dolphins" are set for the Mill Bay and there is no other vessel in the current fleet that can use this set up.
So using her on any type of relief run - ect.... doesn't make any sense and will not work.
Hence the cost incur to bring another vessel on line when she goes off line for refit. It takes time & money to re-set the dolphins.
Do all the members on this forum understand what I mean by the "dolphins"

Yes, I know what you mean Cascade. And everyone else as much as we want our favorite vessels around forever despite all the emotional attachments we have to them being BC Ferries fans, we just cant have them around forever. I dont think the Mill Bay will be here in another 20 or 30 years as she will be really old by then and maybe the route will be gone or who knows the future they might even have a bridge going across. Ferries cant run forever. Dolphins, I love Dolphins!! A dolphin is a sea animal! lol, Yeah but the dolphins, arent they the things that stick out, darn, how do I describe it, I think I know what your refering to, describe it some more. My advice, ride your favorite ferries as much as you can and take lots of photos so you can remember them, when they are gone!

Dolphins are the bumpers directly next to the loading ramps right?
Since there are ships like the Kahloke and the Klitsa that are much newer than the Mill Bay, there is no point to keeping it around. Maybe they can turn it into the world's largest bathtub racing bathtub? Then it can saunter across the straight at 8 knots when the other tubs are going 30+ knots

She should work as relief for a short route such as Denman to Hornby well there aren't alot of routes that they can use her on probably they should use her on Denman-Hornby because the Nimpkish will be retired sooner or later and plus she would be perfect there because that route in the off season gets around 16 cars right

shouldn't they retire the Mill Bay before the Nimpkish

Have they ever put radar on the Mill Bay? Or even some GPS?

According to the book "The Ships of British Columbia," the Mill Bay was "the last" ship to recieve radar; so I guess it does have radar.

Okay, heres the thing. i think that they should reset the dolphins to the Current K class, and then pull a fast cat, and put a little for fitting thing in there so that the ship can still use the berths, then when she needs to be replaced, any boat in the fleet (and im hoping that the kulleet and klatawa will rejoin the fleet by 2010) could use the berth when the ship goes out, and if you make them right, then the mill bay could town them to any run that shes working on. either that or make some extension on the boat to maker her fit. slice her, make her wider till shes standard, and then everyones happy.

Sounds like a good plan, but if one of the Kulleet or Klatawa is on the route, then the other boat would reduce any need for a refitted Mill Bay.

That sounds like a really good to have the Klatawa and Kulleet on that route. They probably could do the route alot faster because they wouldn't have to turn around and have more horsepower.

Every time I'm on the Peninsula and ready to head back up the island the ferry has made it's last run. Too bad they couldn't run it past 6:30. I'm going to have to make a point of making a trip on it before it's contracted out or made redundant.

Here are two photos of the Mill Bay I took today. I thought I would head down to Brentwood to get some photos. Only got two photos as it's kind of hard around there to get some good photos. Maybe I will have to ride here one day! ca.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/karladelman/album?.dir=/fc78&urlhint=actn,ren%3as,1%3af,0 Last two bottom photos!

does anyone on here have pics of the Mill bay's lounge?

I'll be sure to get some shots of the Mill Bay's lounge when I'm aboard on tuesday. Someone mentioned a while back that her lounge is actually *below* the car deck.

Yeah, I remember that. And the heads are near the wheelhouse. It should be the opposite!
The Dogwood Princess I had the seating area at water level. It was nicknamed the Washing Machine due to the small portholes as windows.

I say it's sort of ironic that the Mill Bay carries more than the Nimpkish it must be sort of loud in that lounge though also I bet I could get 10 or less photos on the Mill Bay imagine if you could get 100

Harbourlynx Kid - the dolphin's are on the terminal / dock not on the vessels. They are held in place by massive anchor chains. (This is the bit that cost money to re-position the chains).
Harry have you figured out that the Saanich Inlet is not a lake but the sea?
I'll email the bridge pictures I have to Harbourlynx Kid and he can post them. I also have engine room photo's.
The MV Cascade - then MV Brentwood - they used until the mid 50's a method of Fog horns to tell where they were in the inlet - when the weather front was to deep - thick to see. Remember her speed is only 8kn - but they reduced this when in "deep" fog to around 3-5kn's. Also the captains had a lot of "local" knowledge - plus they have radio on board - so they knew where all the "local" craft were. There is very little - to no fishing in the inlet - and with thick fog you will not get that many sail boats out - will you?

Good Idea! , set the dolphins like the rest of the fleet on M.V Mill bay, and rebuild the terminals so Mill bay can be replaced when she is in refit/rebuild. Mill bay is a good vessel and deserves to be treated with respect, not punishment of scrap when she is innocent!
