Let's keep the Mill Bay until the day before she sinks. That way no one will be on the wreck when she tours the briney deep.
In all seriousness, at a stage in a vessel's life, the upkeep and insuarance costs become prohibitive. 40 years should be the max. It's too bad we couldn't build boats in BC, then sell them after they're 20 years old or so to another nation and then build a new one. This nonsense with mid-life rebuilds and a rust-bucket fleet would be non-existant.
Ferries can't be left in use past their usefulness. Doing so is foolish and puts people's lives at risk. You don't see any DC-3's in service because they're 'classic' and 'historic'. Old ships lack the amenities and services that a modern ship can provide. Eventually, the cost of upgrading services and safety equipment approach a level when it doesn't cost much more for a brand new vessel.

I know, but mill bay is THE oldest vessel on the BC coast now, keep her until 2015, then sell her, but put her on a different route in 2009/2010. That's if we are alive at that time.

I put the over/under on the Mill Bay Retirement Watch at 2008. Any other guesses? The winner gets a free windbreaker.

What I mean by if we are alive by then, is if we survive the Super-eruption of Yellowstone!

How the hell do they know what happened 200 million years ago. That's probably all crap.
As for keeping the ferries, Cumberland AND Capilano. MILL BAY should be gone ALREADY!

Sold already maybe, she is not old enough to be scrapped yet, or she is too old to be scrapped I hope, I must tell BCFerries I want the Mill bay, if I can get enough money for it.

Good, do it. Queen of Victoria was sold for about $600,000...I doubt they'd get $100,000 for the Mill Bay.

Probably way less, they sold the Vesuvius Queen for $85,000

BC Ferries doesn't give a poopoo. Once they contract that route out the new operator will probably sell it.
