This is very interesting as they are pulling on Monday 30th May until June 3rd the MV Mill Bay for it's refit.
Plus they are doing it in - at Brentwood Bay docks / terminal - not in the shipyard. The list of things been done include - Extending the Wheelhouse, installing new emergency boat, preventive maintenance on main engine. They also claim to be pre-fabricating many of the refit components before hand.
How in the past - like the last 20 years - she has always gone off line for about 6 weeks and into a yard. So why do it local and in 5 days. This has the "local" presure group wondering what they did all the other years - and why was she off for so long back then - when it now appears she is having a lot more work done on her - than she had in past 5 years - a part from having the hull checked and painted - nothing else major was done - yet she was always off line for 6 weeks - with massive lost in income. Something is up. She is not due her next major survey until 2009 - so just maybe the local group is starting to get to the upper management of BCFS - some how I don't think so....but you never know with this lot......do you???

She might just have a diver go down and check her, thats what they do to the lynx, and you might be lucky enough to find out that maybe they just thought it easier, for if there was to e a mojor accident, she could be rushed into service at a moments notice, maybe they think that the route is just a little bit more important now

"Massive loss of income"
It's cheaper to have no ferry running there, so refits are really a period of savings.

all they need at the terminals is some reserved parking space for ferry traffic, then it might make some profit.

Someone should get some photos of her while the Mill Bay is not in service

Dane - as ever the most positive person in the world.
The local pressure group where very stun and surprised to see that she is only off line for 5 days - now. Given that one of the two Masters (Capt) is leaving. They (BCFS) also promised to give the local people an idea of what they plan for her. Still nothing on that front.
Her next MAJOR survey is due in 2009 - so I think that will be the big crunch time.

Hey that's awesome, your moving to Sidney! I am in Sidney alot. I am always out that way in Sidney or at the airport. I dont go to Brentwood Bay that much but I could do if anyone wanted. But I guess we could just leave up to Quinsam to get some photos.

I just need to know how to attach photos to the message post to get you to see them, not use the img/img, but attach it straight to the message from the computer hard drive.

That'll work kinda better. What if we got Karl or Harry getting photos while shes in refit and before and after she goes. Because this is going to be big for the Mill Bay

For such proponents of a pay-for system I don't understand the infatuation theres seems to be on this board for an archaic unneeded route. I couldn't care less if you like the boat, or if it meens you can get off the highway for awhile. What it really meens is a drain on funds that could be allocated in much more beneficial ways.

the route maybe useless when the malahat is open, but what do you do if the malahat is closed, the motels/hotels are full, and there is no ferry route to saanich or victoria?
Keep the route open, but put it for when the Malahat is closed.
The M.V Mill bay could be put to a new route.

I'll tell you what I'd do. Head back up to Crofton, take the ferry to Vesuvius, drive down Saltspring to Fulford Harbour and take the Skeena to Swartz Bay. Drive down to Victoria from there.

aren't you worried about your cost of petrol (gasoline)? I would like to ride the Mill bay sometime, may 30th is when I start school, maybe I could go down after school to get some snapshots of the M.v Mill bay in the very short refit.

My man on the spot has taken some pictures - and when she is tied up he will get some done before and after there fit. I have asked him for more from the bridge and engine room.
Harbourlynx Kid has posted some on his site - so will ask if he can do the same again.

Alternate Route ...keeping the Mill Bay just in case is a pretty expensive "just in case."

the mill bay ferry is the alternate route for th malahat. if anybody remebers the propane truck accident in the fall of 2000 then you will remember the need for this route

yeah but you go along that thinking, then the sea to sky needs a permanent ferry route, and all the other small roads. it could be profitable. but not right now.

OK to clear up a point - which BCF got wrong - the delay is due to the parts not turning up for the engine - all the rest of the "spin" put out by BCF is crap. They order in the replacement parts 9 weeks in advance and were told - informed that everything would be ready to do a simple change over. Well the parts have not turned up - and guess where they are coming from....... So who wants to destroy this route apart from Dane....
Just to let you know - this info has come straight from a person sitting on the vessel doing nothing - I have seen the pictures of the old parts stripped off and people standing around waiting for the replacement bit's to turn up. Harbourlynx will post them for.
Don't you just love the Media - PR department of the Ferries. They will tell you it is sunny when it's raining.
