I wonder why she is going to Swartz Bay? I will have to try and get some photos of her. If I can sneak into the truck ferry area is the best spot for getting photos. Drive in, snap some photos, and leave. I have been told to leave though the odd time when I have been down there which pisses me off, I know your not suppose to be down there but for a minute or so when nothing is happening there. Shouldent be a problem.

We need more spots around Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay to view the ferries.

I agree. Horseshoe Bay is nice because it has the town and that park on the Waterfront which always offers a good view of the ferry terminal.

Not to mention the old government warf that gets you even closer to the ferries in Horseshoe Bay.

Bad news, but a welcome confirmation regarding the future of the Queen of Nanaimo. I just picked up the "Island Tides" a couple days ago, and it sounds like the Nanny might be loosing it's hot food service "No more hot food on Queen of Nanaimo" the article is titled, and it goes on to say: "In response to a question at a public meeting in Sechelt on March 21, BC Ferry Services President David Hahn said that the company is considering 'adjusting' the cafeteria on the Queen of Nanaimo. "Hahn was quick to confirm BC Ferry Services' commitment to the continuation of Route 9, and suggested that the changes would be made in the course of a forthcoming multi-million dollar refit. Speculation has centred on a possible replacement of the cafeteria with a 'convenience store' and vending machines." It would be a depressing sign of the effect of privitization, but one might see the silver lining of this article as being the confirmation of the multi-million dollar upgrade (and therefore keeping) of the Queen of Nanaimo. I do think, however, that between the line-ups at busy times, and the upto 3 hour sailings for some people, there is a strong argument to keep the hot food. As far as I'm concerned, BC Ferries is still public transportation, and I urge those who use route 9 to voice their opinion to their local government, MLA and MP!

***PICTURES ALERT THEN*** If that truly what IS up BC Ferries sleeve, then I urge everybody who CAN to get pics of the interior of the Nanaimo, while they can. If they go ahead with such a bone-headed idea to shut down the cafeteria, then life aboard the Nanny will never be the same. This news is yet ANOTHER example of the WRONG DIRECTION BC Ferries is headed in,TOTALLY $$ driven, with now clearly NO passenger concern

When you have a route that loses as much money as #9, why wouldn't BCF be "totally $ driven". If you lost millions each year doing something, wouldn't you be focused on the dollars too?
just playing devils advocate. flame away....

i can't see them closing the cafeteria completly. they need those crew on board so they can actually be liciensed to carry passengers. on a sunday afternoon sailing from the gulf islands in the summer that cafeteria is lined up past the chief stewards office all the way across the strait for the whole sailing. they may adjust somethings in the caf but i don't see it being closed right up. will get in contact with my informant about this.

Pardon my stereotyping, but is there a lot of "rich, beautiful Vancouver people" that use the Nanny on weekends, to get to the cottage in the gulf islands?
I was on the Nanny on this route once, and I noticed a lot of BMW, Mercedes, etc leaving Long Harbour.
So, to be blunt, I ask: "are there a lot of rich snots who use the Q-Nanaimo?" Is the sailing full of princesses, barbi-dolls and "important" doctors & lawyers?
just wondering.....

Maybe so. Those people are probably from West Vancouver, more specifically, the British properties.

When is this expected to happen??? I have to get on the Nanny again as I only been on her once and I would like to get on her again before they start changing things on her. The one time I was on her I never actually did go in the Caf. But I could smell something good in there. Some nice hot soup, which was perfect as it was kind of a miserable day.

Whoa, if you were going to Galiano on those sailings and wanted to get in the Caf you probably would never make it in there if the lineup was backed up as it's only 50 mins to Galiano from Tsawwassen.

What would be the best round trip from Saltspring to fully document the Nanny without getting bored (would be able to drop 500 photos) this summer (july/August)? I would do it with my mom, would be fun. but I would make the focus on the Nanny vs Docks etc. Also doing night shooting is better for interior shots so that I don't blow out the highlights (even though I can do F29 on my D70). Also this is shooting RAW.

A good Sailing on the Nanny is the 12:15PM Saturday sailing direct to Long Harbour. It's never busy. I usually take it on my annual trip to Saltspring. The sailing takes around 1hr, 20 mins.

I know about that sailing (I took it back in Feb), but the lighting is bad and I need time to fully document the ferry, and it would have to be from the SaltSpring end as a round trip not one way.

I think she is at Swartz Bay right now, as there is a Queen docked there and it's not the Saanich because she is doing extra sailings today and is on her way to Tsawwassen right now. I will check it out this afternoon as I will be going out that way. If you look on the webcam you can see her.
